In a video posted on Mumbai FC’s official Instagram account, Shroff addressed the fans directly and cut through the rumours.

“Really, really unfortunate, but a work commitment has come up at the last moment, so I won’t be able to make it to Shillong for the Durand Cup,” he said, confirming he will miss the match against Nongkseh SS & CC.

Commitment without the boots

Shroff made it clear the decision was not about backing away from the challenge. He stressed that he had wanted to play and that his involvement with the club runs deeper than a one-off appearance.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to support you guys to the best of my capability. There’s so much young talent, and with the right support and opportunities, I truly believe Indian football can do wonders,” he said.

Those words echo the role he has carved out at Mumbai FC: part-player, part-ambassador, a high-profile figure lending visibility to a young club trying to grow in a crowded sporting landscape.

His football interest is not new. Over the past two years, he has consistently turned up in district league fixtures, trained with the squad, and spoken about his desire to test himself in a professional setting. The Durand Cup, with its history and national reach, looked the ideal stage.
