St Patrick's Athletic Stuns Shamrock Rovers in FAI Cup Upset

Teenager Sam Rooney delivered a seismic shock in Inchicore, striking in extra-time as St Patrick's Athletic roared back from 2-0 down to dump Club Orange FAI Cup holders Shamrock Rovers out in a pulsating third-round tie at Richmond Park.

Rovers looked in complete control at the break. Jonathan Afolabi and Michael Noonan had punished the Saints’ wastefulness, the Hoops clinical where the home side had been profligate, and Stephen Bradley’s men went down the tunnel with a two-goal cushion despite facing the bulk of the pressure.

Ed McGinty guessed right and almost kept it out, but the ball squeezed past him and the tie was wrenched into extra-time.

Early in the first period of extra-time, 17-year-old Rooney wrote his own cup story. Composed where others might have snatched at the chance, he applied the decisive finish that turned a remarkable comeback into a famous upset and sent the home support into delirium.

Rovers, out on their feet and out of answers, could not find a response. Their reign as Club Orange FAI Cup holders ended on a grim note, capping a miserable week for Bradley’s side and leaving St Pat’s dreaming of how far this surge of belief can carry them.
