Sporting CP vs Galatasaray: Champions League Opener Preview
The Estádio José Alvalade braces for a fierce European night on Wednesday, Sept. 9, as Sporting CP welcome Galatasaray for Matchday 1 of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League league phase.
Both arrive in Lisbon with momentum. Neither plans to give an inch.
Sporting sharp at home, chasing Porto domestically
Sporting step into Europe on the back of a controlled 2-0 win over Nacional in the Primeira Liga, a result that kept their early-season rhythm intact. After five league games, they sit second in Portugal with four wins and one draw, only trailing Porto, who have started with a flawless 15 points.
Luis Suárez and Flávio Gonçalves provided the goals against Nacional, underlining the attacking depth Ruben Amorim can lean on as the competition level rises.
Sporting, though, are not at full strength. According to reports from Sports Mole, Nuno Santos is a doubt with a muscle issue, while João Simões is struggling with a foot injury and could also miss out. Those absences may force tweaks down the left and in build-up play, but the core of the side remains intact.
The predicted Sporting XI against Galatasaray: Silva; Fresneda, Debast, Inacio, Araujo; Altimira, Doumbia; Catamo, Zalazar, Goncalves; Suarez.
It’s a lineup built to press, to run, and to turn Alvalade into a cauldron from the first whistle.
Galatasaray arrive as champions – and in form
Across the pitch, Galatasaray land in Lisbon as reigning Turkish champions and early leaders again in the Süper Lig. After four matchdays, Okan Buruk’s side have three wins and one draw, 10 points, and top spot.
Their latest outing was a breathless 3-2 away victory over İstanbul Başakşehir. Victor Osimhen, Lucas Torreira and Gabriel Sara all found the net, a reminder of how many different ways this team can hurt opponents.
One cloud hangs over that win. Osimhen is dealing with an adductor problem, and his availability remains uncertain. No confirmation yet either way, which turns his name into the big question mark on the teamsheet. With him, Galatasaray carry a constant threat in behind. Without him, Buruk must shuffle his attacking pieces.
The predicted Galatasaray XI vs Sporting: Cakir; Sallai, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakobs; Sara, Torreira; Sane, Batrakov, Akgun; Yilmaz.
Torreira and Sara will try to control the middle, while Barış Alper Yılmaz leads the line, supported by pace and creativity in the three behind.
