Simeone Draws a Line on Julian Alvarez's Future at Atletico

Diego Simeone has made up his mind.

According to Diario Sport, the Atletico Madrid coach no longer sees a future at the club for Julian Alvarez after the forward’s public request for a transfer during World Cup 2026. For Simeone, the issue is no longer tactical or financial. It is about commitment.

He does not want a player who is looking elsewhere. He will not try to change Alvarez’s mind. As reported, Simeone is “not going to invest time or energy in trying to convince the player” to stay and believes that if Alvarez wants out, the door should be open.

That stance leaves Atletico in a complicated position. The club are reluctant to sell to Barcelona, their direct rival and the team leading the chase. Yet the saga now demands a resolution, and quickly. A dressing room built on intensity and unity cannot carry a star who has already spoken publicly about leaving.

Barcelona, sensing an opportunity, are preparing a new offer. Alvarez’s latest statements have encouraged the Catalan club to return to the table, though it is unclear whether they will reach the €150 million figure being discussed around the deal. That number would test even Barcelona’s appetite.

The market around Alvarez is not limited to Spain. Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring the situation and are reported to be interested in the Argentina international. On paper, it looks like the perfect bidding war.

But there is a twist.

Those close to the situation suggest Alvarez has one destination in mind: Barcelona. The forward is said to be focused on a move to Camp Nou and not considering other options at this stage, a stance that could weaken Atletico’s negotiating power and narrow the field to a single serious buyer.

So the positions are clear. Simeone wants a clean break. Atletico do not want to strengthen Barcelona. Barcelona want the player, but at their price. And Alvarez, by all accounts, wants Barcelona or nothing.

Something has to give.
