Seamus Coleman Left Out of Republic of Ireland Squad for Nations League

Seamus Coleman has been left out of the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming Nations League window, a notable omission for a player who has defined a generation of Irish defending.

The 37-year-old, without a club since bringing a 17-year Everton career to a close at the end of the 2025-26 season, made 433 appearances for the Toffees and captained both club and country. He was involved as recently as June’s international friendlies, but his 81 caps will not be added to over the next few weeks.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson confirmed on Thursday that Coleman will sit out the four-game block, stressing that the door remains firmly open.

“It is my intention in whatever shape or form that he [Coleman] would be with us in the future, hopefully as a player,” Hallgrimsson said at the squad announcement.

Coleman has been training on his own as he waits for the right club move, but that lack of team training proved decisive.

“His intention is to play, he's keeping fit but he hasn't been training with a club so we felt together, and it was more his decision, that it would be appropriate he sit out this one, mostly because he thought it was unfair to other players that he would be taking up a place,” Hallgrimsson explained.

Nations League Schedule

Ireland face a demanding Nations League schedule in Group B3: away to Kosovo on 24 September, then Israel on 27 September, Austria on 1 October, and a second meeting with Israel on 4 October.

Coleman is not the only experienced figure missing. Robbie Brady is also absent as he, too, is currently without a club. Captain Nathan Collins will miss out through injury, recovering from a calf problem picked up in Brentford’s 1-1 Premier League draw with Sunderland on 5 September.

Injury List

The injury list runs deep. Evan Ferguson (ankle), Josh Cullen (knee), Jack Taylor (knee), Mikey Johnston (ankle) and Oisin McEntee have all been ruled out, while QPR defender Jimmy Dunne suffered a muscular injury earlier this month.

The setbacks have opened the door for fresh faces.

Sheffield United loanee Liam Kitching has earned his first senior call-up, the left-sided centre-back currently on a season-long loan from Coventry City. Uncapped Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan and Owen Elding of Sligo Rovers also step into contention for debut caps during this four-match window.

A squad once built around Coleman’s relentless drive now leans on new defenders, new voices, and a new hierarchy. The games will reveal whether this reshaped back line can stand up to the test – and how long Ireland can imagine a future without their former captain on the pitch.
