Savinho Joins Tottenham for £75 Million Amid Rebuild

Tottenham have smashed through the £300 million barrier this window, landing Brazilian winger Savinho from Manchester City in a deal worth a reported initial £75 million.

It is a huge fee for a player who never quite cracked Pep Guardiola’s starting XI. Over two seasons at City, the 22-year-old flickered rather than burned, struggling to turn promise into permanence in a squad stacked with attacking talent.

Spurs, though, see something different.

De Zerbi’s gamble after a great escape

Tottenham are not shopping from a position of comfort. They survived by the skin of their teeth last season, narrowly avoiding relegation and the club’s first drop into the second tier in 49 years. Roberto De Zerbi arrived late, steadied the ship and kept them up. Now he is ripping it up.

The Italian’s overhaul, however, has started badly. A 3-0 home defeat to Brentford on the opening weekend was a brutal reminder of how far this side still has to go, even after a summer of heavy spending.

Into that turbulence walks Savinho.

"It's taken a while but I'm very happy to be here," he said in the club’s announcement, clearly aware of the expectation that comes with the price tag. "It's a wonderful opportunity at a brilliant club with one of the best managers in the world.

"As soon as I spoke to the head coach I knew I had to come. He told me he wants to help me reach the highest level and I believe we can do that together, as a team."

For De Zerbi, Savinho is not just another winger. He is a weapon.

"Savio is a player who brings energy, imagination and quality in wide positions. He has the courage to attack defenders and the ability to change a game with his creativity," the Spurs boss said. "We're very pleased to have him with us, and I'm looking forward to working with him, helping him continue to grow and seeing him bring his personality to the team."

From Girona spark to City frustration

Savinho’s journey to north London has wound its way through the City Football Group network. City signed him from Troyes in 2024 for around £30 million, betting on the explosive form he showed on loan at Girona, where his pace and directness lit up La Liga and drew attention across Europe.

That version of Savinho has rarely been seen in England.

In 84 appearances for City, he scored just seven times as the club, unusually, failed to win either the Premier League or the Champions League in Guardiola’s final two seasons. The numbers are modest. The faith, clearly, is not.

City have protected their position too. They could reportedly receive up to an extra £10 million in add-ons if Savinho hits certain targets at Spurs.

A revolution gathers pace

Savinho joins a long list of new faces in a frantic Tottenham rebuild. Big-money arrivals Mateus Fernandes, Sandro Tonali and Jan Paul van Hecke have already come through the door, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka have been added on free transfers to bulk out the squad.

And the business is not done.

There is likely to be further traffic between Manchester and north London before the window closes next week, with Egyptian forward Omar Marmoush also expected to leave City for Spurs as De Zerbi continues to reshape his attack.

Tottenham have paid for potential, for chaos on the flanks, for a winger who loves to run at defenders and bend games to his rhythm. Last season they were clinging on. This season, with Savinho and an expensive cast around him, there will be nowhere to hide.
