Saudi Arabia Squad Announcement for Gulf 27

Saudi coach Georgios Donis is set to reveal his Saudi Arabia squad for the Arabian Gulf Cup on Wednesday, as the hosts gear up for a long-awaited shot at regional glory on home soil in Jeddah.

The 27th edition of the tournament, “Gulf 27”, kicks off on 23 September and runs until 6 October, with the “Green Falcons” looking to end a 23-year drought in the competition. Their last title came back in 2003. For a football power of Saudi Arabia’s stature, that gap bites.

According to Saudi channel Al-Ekhbariya, Donis will announce his final list the day after tomorrow, giving him one last window to wrestle with some uncomfortable decisions before the opening whistle.

And they are uncomfortable.

Saudi Arabia will have to do without their talisman and captain Salem Al-Dawsari, ruled out of the tournament through injury. The loss strips Donis of his most experienced attacking reference point and the team of its emotional leader. There is more concern on the right flank too, with right-back Saud Abdulhamid also at risk of missing out.

The absences force a rethink at exactly the moment Saudi Arabia wanted stability. Hosting the tournament in Jeddah brings expectation, noise and pressure. It also brings opportunity.

Saudi Arabia have been drawn in Group One alongside Iraq, Oman and Kuwait. It is a group with history, edge and no guarantees. Only a top-two finish will be enough to reach the semi-finals, leaving Donis little margin for error in his first major squad call for this competition.
