Santiago Bueno Joins Club América on Loan from Wolves

Santiago Bueno’s Wolves chapter has been put on pause – and revived 5,000 miles away in Mexico City.

The Uruguay centre-back has joined Club América on loan until the end of the season, leaving Wolverhampton Wanderers after failing to make the 25-man Premier League squad. The deal includes an option for the Liga MX leaders to make the move permanent.

Bueno arrived at Molineux from Girona in August 2023 on a five-year contract, billed as a defender entering his prime at 27. He quickly became a regular. Across three seasons he racked up 70 Premier League appearances, anchoring a back line that fought to keep Wolves in the top flight.

His standout moment came last September. Under the lights, against Tottenham, he rose to head in his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw, a snapshot of the authority Wolves hoped he would bring for years.

The story turned sharply last term. Bueno featured 29 times in the league but could not prevent Wolves’ slide out of the Premier League, ending the club’s eight-year stay among England’s elite. Relegation forced a reset. Competition for defensive places intensified. When the new campaign kicked off in the Championship, he was nowhere to be seen.

He didn’t play a single minute before the window closed.

With Wolves overloaded for the 25-man squad, someone had to give. That someone was Bueno.

“This was our most difficult move of the whole window due to the circumstances,” technical director Matt Jackson told the club’s website.

The club knew there were still open markets after the English deadline and, when the numbers didn’t add up, Bueno was the one left on the outside.

Club América, sitting top of Liga MX and chasing more silverware, have stepped in. For them, it’s a low-risk shot at a seasoned international defender who has lived the intensity of the Premier League. For Bueno, it’s a chance to reboot his career at one of the most demanding clubs in the Americas.

Wolves, meanwhile, watch from a distance. If he thrives in Mexico City, the next decision on his future might not belong to them for long.
