Sam Szmodics Returns to Derby County: A Permanent Move

Sam Szmodics is back at Derby County – and this time, it feels permanent in everything but name.

The 30-year-old forward has rejoined the Rams from Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, but Derby’s commitment runs far deeper than a short-term fix. The deal includes an obligation to buy the Republic of Ireland international at the end of the 2026-27 campaign, with the fee understood to be appearance-based and in the region of £2.7m.

It is a move shaped by familiarity, trust and unfinished business.

Eustace reunion and a proven scorer

Szmodics returns to Pride Park after a brief but telling spell last season. He made 13 appearances and scored three times as Derby pushed for the Championship play-offs, only to fall four points short. The numbers were modest, yet the impression was strong enough that both player and club were keen to pick up the story again.

Crucially, he is back under a manager who knows exactly how to get the best out of him. Under John Eustace at Blackburn Rovers in 2023-24, Szmodics produced the season of his life, finishing as the Championship’s leading scorer with 27 goals. That kind of form does not get forgotten in a hurry.

Those goals persuaded Ipswich to spend £9m to bring him to Portman Road in the summer of 2024, as they prepared for their first Premier League campaign in more than 20 years. It was a bold signing, a statement that a newly promoted side could shop for proven second-tier firepower.

The reality was harsher. Szmodics struck just four times in the top flight as the Tractor Boys went straight back down. The following season brought only one goal in 18 appearances before he moved to Derby on loan. A player who had once terrorised Championship defences suddenly needed a reset.

The fit between Szmodics and Derby quickly felt natural. The club’s ambitions matched his own. The environment suited him. The relationship with Eustace gave him clarity.

Szmodics has already set the target as plainly as possible: “Hopefully, we will go one step further than we did last year and get promoted to the Premier League.” Derby’s near miss last season has left a mark. Bringing back a forward with a 27-goal Championship campaign on his CV is a clear statement that the club intend to turn frustration into momentum.

The structure of the deal underlines that intent. An obligation to buy, triggered by appearances, is not a gamble taken lightly. Derby are effectively staking a significant fee on Szmodics becoming a central figure across multiple seasons, not just a short burst of form.

Thompson set for the exit

While Szmodics settles back in, another chapter at Derby is close to closing.

Midfielder Liam Thompson is on the verge of leaving the club for Mansfield Town. The 24-year-old’s story is a more traditional one: six years working through the academy ranks, a first-team debut in 2021, and now, with one year left on his deal, the moment to move on.

His departure would clear space in a squad that is being reshaped for another tilt at promotion. It also serves as a reminder of how quickly cycles turn at a club with Derby’s expectations. One player returns as a potential talisman; another, homegrown and established, prepares to chase regular football elsewhere.

For Derby, the equation is simple. They have re-secured a forward who has already lit up this division under this manager. They have tied that commitment to a long-term bet on his influence.

Now the question is not whether Sam Szmodics can score goals in the Championship. He has answered that already. The question is whether he can do it again, in Derby white, with promotion on the line.
