On X, Romano detailed how Fenerbahce came back to the table yesterday evening with an improved offer worth more than €6 million, an approach Napoli accepted. Lukaku has already agreed personal terms.

For now, it is all verbal. Contracts and official documents are due to be checked and exchanged today, the final administrative hurdle before Fenerbahce can present their new centrepiece to supporters who have long craved a marquee No 9.

The timing could hardly be more symbolic for Turkish football.
