Rodri Faces Surgery as Real Madrid Eyes Transfer Deal

Manchester City’s plans for the new season have been hit from two directions at once. Their midfield metronome has gone under the knife, and Europe’s biggest predator has started to circle.

Rodri, the player who has underpinned City’s era of control under Pep Guardiola, is now a major doubt for the Community Shield against Arsenal next month and, more significantly, at the centre of a serious transfer move from Real Madrid.

Community Shield hopes all but gone

Enzo Maresca would have walked into the job at the Etihad with one obvious certainty: build around Rodri. The Spaniard has been City’s reference point, the one who knits everything together, the safety net and the launchpad rolled into one.

Those plans are already under strain.

Rodri went all the way to the final day of the World Cup, stretching his season deeper than almost anyone in the squad. His summer break, mandated after such a workload, does not end until the very week of the Community Shield. That alone made his involvement against Arsenal unlikely.

Now comes confirmation from City that the midfielder has undergone minor back surgery. The operation has been described as successful and the rehabilitation period is expected to be short. Even so, the combination of a late return from international duty and post-surgery recovery all but rules him out of Wembley.

For Maresca, it means his first competitive game in charge is likely to be played without the man most managers would write onto the teamsheet first.

Real Madrid make their move

If that were the only problem, City could absorb it. Rest him, ease him back, move on.

But this is Rodri, and Real Madrid have entered the room.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the Spanish giants have made formal contact with Manchester City over a move for the 28-year-old, with club president Florentino Perez giving the green light to pursue the deal. That is never a casual signal from Madrid; it is a declaration of intent.

The report goes further. Rodri’s long-standing dream, Romano claims, is to play for Real Madrid, and he has been pushing for the move for a long time. Real are understood to be willing to pay more than €50m (£42.8m), a figure that would only serve as a starting point in negotiations with City. The Premier League champions are expected to demand a significantly higher fee.

City, for their part, anticipate other clubs entering the race, but the player’s preference is clear: he wants Madrid. The stage is set for negotiations to accelerate.

Arsenal watching from a distance

From Arsenal’s perspective, the immediate impact is simple. The chances of facing Rodri in the Community Shield are now remote. That removes one of the biggest tactical headaches Mikel Arteta could have faced at Wembley.

Beyond that, the fixture list offers both clubs some breathing space. After the Community Shield, Arsenal and Manchester City do not meet in the Premier League until 28 November, with only the possibility of a League Cup fourth-round tie in October bringing them together sooner.

By then, one of two things will almost certainly be true. Either Rodri will be back in sky blue, anchoring Maresca’s new-look City, or he will be wearing white in Madrid, leaving the champions to solve the most complicated midfield puzzle they have faced in years.

For City, this is no routine early-season bump. Lose Rodri, and they are not just replacing a midfielder. They are trying to replace the rhythm of their entire team.
