Robin Gosens Completes Move to Schalke 04 After Fiorentina Exit

Robin Gosens leaves Fiorentina with a bruise that will take time to fade.

Frozen out, told not to report for pre-season, and quietly ushered towards the exit, the German full-back has completed his move to boyhood club Schalke 04 with a farewell message that mixed gratitude with a sharp sense of injustice.

From cornerstone to cast-off

Two years ago, when Gosens arrived in Florence, it felt like a perfect fit. A driven, intelligent wing-back in a football-mad city, stepping into a club that craved his energy and personality. His first season backed that up: strong performances, a bond with the crowd, a player who looked firmly embedded in Fiorentina’s future.

The second season collapsed in on itself.

By the time Fabio Grosso walked through the door as the new coach, Gosens’ status had shifted brutally. Despite a contract running until June 2028, he was informed he was not part of the plans and was effectively shut out of the squad. No pre-season, no fight for his place, no negotiation over role or minutes. Just a closed door.

The decision hit him hard. In his farewell, shared on social media after the Schalke move was completed, he laid bare the shock of it all, admitting he still does not understand how it unravelled so quickly.

‘I gave my life here’

Gosens painted Florence as more than a workplace. It was home. He spoke of a first year that “went incredibly well,” a second that “went incredibly badly,” but underlined one constant: he insists he gave everything, every day, on and off the pitch, and behaved fairly with everyone around him.

The exclusion from the squad cut deepest. He called it a “drastic decision” and argued that the story between him and Fiorentina “deserved a different ending.” Clubs, he pointed out, demand identity, gratitude, respect and effort from players. In his view, that should flow both ways.

He wanted the chance to fight for his place. That chance never came. “There’s no point fighting when there is no possibility of victory,” he reflected, a line that summed up the power imbalance of a modern footballer suddenly deemed surplus.

Yet the message never descended into a rant. The bitterness was there, clearly directed at the way Fiorentina’s hierarchy handled his exit, but it was wrapped in respect and a long list of thanks.

Gratitude amid the pain

Gosens made sure to name the people who rarely make headlines. The kit staff. The chefs and waiters. The medical department, which he defended after what he felt was excessive and often unfair criticism last season. Every coach and their staff, from whom he said he learned something. Team-mates he described as “like brothers.”

He thanked the fans who made him feel at home “from the first minute” and gave him the sense that what he did on the pitch had meaning. He also reserved words for president Rocco Commisso and his family for giving him the chance to wear the Viola shirt.

For all the anger at the way it ended, Gosens insisted he leaves with “only gratitude” for the “intense and wonderful time” in Florence, convinced he has left his “heart and soul” in the city.

With Fiorentina closing the door, Gosens moved quickly. Schalke 04, the club he supported as a child, offered both an escape and a homecoming. The deal is understood to be a loan with an obligation to buy for around €2.5 million plus add-ons – modest money for a player who, at 32, still carries serious experience from years in Italian football.

For him, the symbolism matters as much as the numbers. “Fortunately, my destiny is taking me right back to the beginning,” he wrote, framing the move to Gelsenkirchen as a return to the place where his love for football was born and his journey towards a professional career truly started.

After a career largely built in Italy, from his rise to prominence to his European nights with Fiorentina, Gosens now steps into a different kind of challenge: reviving Schalke and, in the process, perhaps restoring a sense of control over his own story.

He leaves Florence with scars, but also with the conviction that he did not betray the shirt. Whether Fiorentina will come to regret how abruptly they cut ties with a player who still wanted to fight for his place is a question that will linger long after he has pulled on the royal blue of Schalke.
