Roberto Martinez in Talks to Join Al-Nassr Amid World Cup Campaign

Roberto Martinez is edging towards one of the most intriguing moves of his managerial career, with French outlet RMC Sport reporting that the Portugal head coach is in talks to take over at Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr.

The timing is striking. Martinez is in the middle of a World Cup campaign with Portugal, who opened with a frustrating 1-1 draw against DR Congo on Wednesday. His contract runs only until the end of the tournament, and the stalemate in their first Group K fixture has done little to ease the sense that this cycle may be reaching its natural conclusion.

RMC Sport reports that discussions with Al-Nassr did not begin in reaction to that result. They were already under way before a ball was kicked at this World Cup. That detail matters. It suggests a coach planning his next step while still fronting a campaign on the biggest stage, juggling the present with what looks increasingly like an inevitable future move.

Al-Nassr, of course, is the club of Cristiano Ronaldo. At 40, Ronaldo remains central to both stories. He started Portugal’s draw against DR Congo, played the full 90 minutes, and continues to carry the weight of a nation’s expectation. If Martinez does end up in Riyadh, he would be swapping one version of Ronaldo’s world for another, trading the pressure of international tournament football for the relentless spotlight of Saudi Arabia’s most high-profile project.

Portugal's Position in Group K

On the pitch, the draw has left Portugal with work to do. The Iberian side sit third in Group K after that opening slip, their position further complicated when Colombia later beat Uzbekistan to move top of the table. The margins are already tight. One game in, and the group has a clear leader, an early stumble, and a coach whose future is being mapped out elsewhere.

Martinez has already lived one long international cycle with Belgium, taking a so-called golden generation to the brink without quite crossing the line. With Portugal, his tenure may end far more quickly. If RMC Sport’s information holds, the next chapter is already being written in Saudi Arabia, where Al-Nassr are preparing to hand him the keys to a dressing room led by the same superstar he currently leans on in a very different shirt.
