Richarlison's Future at Tottenham in Limbo After Failed Transfers

Richarlison’s return to Brazil has collapsed, leaving his Tottenham future no clearer and his season drifting in limbo.

The forward’s proposed move to Vasco da Gama is off after talks over personal terms broke down, despite sources indicating Spurs and the Brazilian club had settled on a fee for the 29-year-old. The deal was seen as a route back home and a reset after a turbulent spell in north London. Instead, the clock has run down.

With the Brazil transfer window shutting on Friday night, the growing expectation around the club is that Richarlison will now stay at Spurs, at least for the time being. Stay, but not play much – that’s the looming question.

He has already been left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad, a consequence of another failed move. On deadline day, a £35m switch back to Everton collapsed at the final stage, again over personal terms. Two exits lined up. Two exits gone.

The stand-off has deepened since. On Thursday, it emerged that Richarlison and Spurs are in dispute over the remaining nine months of his contract. The Brazilian is understood to be exploring every option, with sources suggesting he wants to be released from the rest of his deal, which expires next summer. Tottenham, though, hold a crucial card: they can trigger a 12‑month extension.

So he waits. And so do they.

Roberto de Zerbi, asked to cut through the uncertainty at his news conference on Friday, refused to be drawn into the saga.

“I don’t know,” he said. “It’s not my job.”

The head coach kept his distance from the contractual wrangle but did choose to underline the shared history between player and club in recent months.

“What I can say is I know very well what the club has done for Richarlison and I know very well what Richarlison has done for the club in the last month, two months,” he said. “I know, the club knows, he knows, his agent knows. Everyone knows better than you [the media]. Much better.”

The message was pointed. The details stay in-house; the tension does not.

For now, Richarlison sits outside the Premier League squad, without a move to Brazil, locked in a contractual dispute and staring at a season that could easily slip away. Spurs hold the extension option. The player wants a clean break.

Something has to give. The only unknown is when – and on whose terms.
