Reiss Nelson's Future: Arsenal and West Ham Negotiations

Arsenal and West Ham are in active talks over a move for Reiss Nelson, with the winger’s future at the Emirates edging towards a decisive moment.

The 26-year-old has spent the last two seasons rebuilding his career away from north London, first at Brentford and then at Fulham, but a pathway back into Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans has not opened up. He returned to Arsenal this summer only to find the door effectively closed for the coming campaign.

West Ham have sensed an opportunity. Preparing for a promotion push in the Championship, they have approached Arsenal to explore a deal, viewing Nelson as a ready-made injection of top-level quality for a squad aiming to bounce back immediately.

Arsenal, for their part, are understood to be receptive. Nelson has entered the final year of his contract and the club are keen to secure a move that protects his value rather than risk losing him for nothing next summer. Early conversations have given encouragement to the Hammers, who have been met with a positive response from the Emirates hierarchy.

Dropping into the Championship is no small call for a 26-year-old who has spent the last two seasons in the Premier League and still attracts interest from abroad. Personal terms with West Ham have not yet been discussed, with Nelson weighing up his options.

He has several. Benfica are among the clubs to have registered interest this summer. The Portuguese giants are now managed by Marco Silva, the coach who brought Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago and knows exactly what he can offer. That existing relationship adds a different kind of pull compared with a promotion chase in England’s second tier.

Arsenal’s Preference

Arsenal’s preference is clear: a permanent sale. The club would like a clean break if possible, though there have been enquiries over another loan. Should they sanction a temporary move, the Gunners hold an option to extend Nelson’s contract by 12 months, a built-in safeguard to avoid losing an asset on the cheap.

Nelson is not the only senior figure who could leave before the window closes. Arsenal are open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira as they reshape the squad. Jesus, linked with Napoli, has been valued at up to £20 million, but there has been no formal approach from the Italian side so far. Interest exists; concrete bids do not.

Further down the depth chart, the club are also working on a loan move for goalkeeper Tommy Setford, with a view to securing him regular first-team football this season and accelerating his development away from the shadows of the Emirates.
