This time the picture is very different.

Thiago’s return adds yet another midfield option, giving Mourinho more levers to pull as the fixtures pile up. The coach finally has choices instead of compromises.

The big question: Valverde or Camavinga?

One dilemma refuses to go away.

Mourinho’s main decision revolves around who partners Bernardo Silva in midfield. The battle is clear: Federico Valverde or Eduardo Camavinga.

Valverde has been a workhorse since the first whistle of the season. Four La Liga matches, one Champions League outing, and barely a pause. He has missed just over 20 minutes in total, taken off in the 77th minute against Malaga and again for the final eight minutes against Real Betis.

He sets the tempo, covers every blade, and rarely dips. But even engines overheat.

Mourinho has shown he understands the risk of overloading players this early. With three games in nine days, he cannot simply lean on Valverde until the legs go. Camavinga offers energy, press resistance and a different rhythm on the ball. The decision is not just about Rayo; it’s about getting through the next week intact.

Bernardo Silva, meanwhile, looks almost certain to start. The Portuguese playmaker opened the season in the XI for Real’s first two league games, then came off the bench against Malaga and Betis. He has played 205 of a possible 360 La Liga minutes, just under 60% of the total.

That usage tells its own story. Important, but managed. Mourinho appears determined not to overload his compatriot, keeping him sharp for when the season hardens and the knockout rounds and decisive league clashes arrive.

Arda Guler’s chance to stake a claim

Arda Guler should come back into the starting line-up against Rayo after missing the Champions League opener. For the Turk, every start feels like an audition.

His beginning to the season has been strong, but the reality at Real is brutal. No one in the attacking or creative roles can relax. Not with Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham almost locked into Mourinho’s plans and expected to start again.

That attacking trident leaves little room for error. Guler has to treat nights like this as an argument in his favour. Every touch, every decision, another line in the case he is building to remain among Mourinho’s first-choice options.

If he takes his chance, the competition across the frontline only intensifies. If he doesn’t, the queue behind him is long.

Defence settled, Diaz waits

At the back, Mourinho is unlikely to tinker much after the Inter game. Stability is the word.

Thibaut Courtois will start in goal, protected by a back four of Denzel Dumfries, Ibrahima Konate, Dean Huijsen and Marc Cucurella.

Cucurella, in particular, seems to have convinced Mourinho. The full-back is settling into the line-up and starting to look like a fixed part of the plan, while the rest of the defence continues to enjoy the coach’s trust at this stage of the campaign.

Further forward, not everyone will find room in the XI. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Brahim Diaz is expected to start on the bench, alongside Yan Diomande, a victim of the sheer number of options Mourinho now has available.

Real’s starting side feels almost written already. The only real suspense lies in that midfield slot next to Bernardo Silva: the tireless Valverde or the dynamic Camavinga.
