Real Madrid launch their Champions League league-phase campaign under a cloud. A 1-0 defeat to Real Betis at the weekend has already raised questions, and now Inter Milan arrive at the Santiago Bernabéu with José Mourinho wrestling a full-blown selection headache.

The tie headlines Tuesday night’s fixtures. The problems lie squarely in the middle of the pitch.

Midfield stripped bare

Three suspensions. A key fitness doubt. And a manager refusing to show his hand.

Real Madrid go into the game without Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Güler and Bernardo Silva, all banned for the opener. Camavinga and Güler carry over suspensions from last season, while Silva is punished for his red card in a previous clash against Real Madrid.

Eight players are listed as unavailable. Raúl Asencio, Endrick, Éder Militão, Thiago Pitarch and Rodrygo are all out with injuries, thinning options across the pitch and especially in attack and defense. Camavinga, Güler and Silva complete the list as the suspended trio.

Even Endrick, who has missed the opening matches with a muscular issue, remains a doubt. His name sits in that uncomfortable middle ground: not ruled out, but far from certain.

Inter arrive stronger, but with one key concern

On the other side, Inter Milan land in Madrid in far better health.

UEFA list no confirmed absentees for Cristian Chivu’s side. Only one name sits under the heading “doubtful”: Federico Dimarco. The wing-back suffered a knee problem in Serie A action against Napoli and remains the main concern before the trip to Spain.

If Dimarco fails to make it, Inter will need to rethink the balance on their left flank. His delivery, energy and understanding with the forwards have become a key part of Inter’s attacking structure.

Outside that worry, Chivu has a strong group to choose from. Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Nicolò Barella, Alessandro Bastoni and Lautaro Martínez are all expected to feature, giving Inter a settled core and, on paper, a clear selection advantage over a patched-up Madrid.

UEFA’s latest predicted lineups suggest both coaches will mirror each other with three central defenders.

For Real Madrid, Mourinho is tipped to go 3-5-2. Thibaut Courtois is expected to start in goal, with a back three of Ibrahima Konaté, Antonio Rüdiger and Dean Huijsen.

Across midfield, Denzel Dumfries, Federico Valverde, Jude Bellingham, Brahim Díaz and Marc Cucurella are all projected to start, a blend of energy, drive and improvisation trying to offset the missing suspended trio. Up front, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are set to lead the line, a devastating pairing that can tilt any game regardless of the chaos behind them.

Inter’s predicted XI also lines up with three at the back. Josep Martínez is expected in goal, behind Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Bastoni. Dumfries and Dimarco are listed as wing-backs, with Çalhanoğlu, Barella and Piotr Zieliński patrolling central midfield. Lautaro Martínez and Francesco Pio Esposito are forecast to spearhead the attack.

One detail could still flip the script. If Tchouaméni is not ready, Mourinho’s midfield puzzle becomes even more complex. If Dimarco fails his fitness test, Chivu must remodel Inter’s left side.
