Rafael Leao's Admiration for Ronaldo Fuels Manchester United Transfer Rumors

Rafael Leao has never hidden his admiration for Cristiano Ronaldo. Now that admiration has thrown fresh fuel on one of the summer’s most intriguing transfer stories.

Speaking on the Cernucci podcast, the AC Milan forward was asked if he follows the Premier League and whether he has a favourite club. His answer will have pricked up ears at Old Trafford.

“Yeah of course,” he said. “I like (Manchester) United because my idol is Cristiano Ronaldo, so back then, I used to watch them. I like Arsenal also.”

For a player already linked with a move to Manchester United, it sounded a lot like a door being nudged open.

United’s favourite admirer

Leao’s comments arrive at a delicate moment in his career and at Milan. The Portugal international, 26, is being tracked by several of Europe’s biggest clubs and could be available for around £43m, with Milan missing out on European football and facing financial pressure.

That figure, for a player who has scored 60 goals in 291 appearances for Milan, represents a rare opportunity in a market where top-level wide forwards often command far higher fees. United, searching for a new winger ahead of their return to the Champions League, are watching closely.

Chelsea and Barcelona have both been credited with interest, while clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkiye — notably Galatasaray and Fenerbahce — have explored the possibility of a deal. Recent reports, though, suggest Leao has no appetite for a move outside Europe’s major leagues at this stage of his career.

So the field narrows. And United, with Ronaldo’s shadow still stretching long over Old Trafford, suddenly look a more natural fit.

Old Trafford rebuild gathers pace

United’s summer plans are already in motion. The club is on the verge of completing a £38m move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson as the new manager and recruitment team work through a squad that finished third last season and clawed its way back into the Champions League.

Michael Carrick, guiding United to that top-three finish, has laid down a platform. The new boss now has to raise the ceiling.

He has been clear about the scale of the job. Speaking about the upcoming window, he said: “I think the beauty of the next transfer window, for everybody, it's always the biggest thing in the world, and the most important transfer window of all time, for every club, I think.

“That's just the nature of how it's been created, to be honest, and I think, again, as a football club, you want to keep moving forward. We certainly do. As a football club, we want to keep moving forward.

“I think it's acknowledged we're at this stage, and the dynamics and the balance of the direction we're at, where we've ended up getting to, and finishing in the league, there's obviously work to do.

“It's quite obvious, with certain players leaving, there's a bit of work to do, but this one is not any more important than the last one, it's what's ahead of us as a football club to try and make the most of it.”

The message is blunt: players are leaving, depth is thin, and quality must arrive. A dynamic wide forward sits high on that list.

Ronaldo’s legacy, Leao’s decision

For Leao, the Premier League question is no longer hypothetical. He has made it clear which club first captured his imagination and why. Ronaldo’s years at Old Trafford turned a generation of Portuguese youngsters into United fans; now one of them is a fully formed star with a major decision to make.

United can offer Champions League football, a central role in a rebuilding project, and the chance to follow a path once trodden by his idol. Chelsea bring London and a squad in flux. Barcelona, if they firm up their interest, bring history and pressure in equal measure.

Somewhere in that mix, a £43m release from Milan’s struggles could reshape United’s attack.

Leao has shown where his heart once leaned. The next move will show where his future lies.
