Radek Vitek walked into Old Trafford as a teenager chasing a dream. He leaves it as the most expensive goalkeeper in Championship history.

Manchester United have confirmed the Czech stopper has joined Middlesbrough in a permanent deal worth up to £14million, a fee that smashes the division’s previous benchmarks for a keeper. Leicester City’s move for Mads Hermansen at around £6.5m and Southampton’s £6.05m swoop for Daniel Peretz now sit some distance behind.

United have not simply waved him off. The deal is laced with protection: a buy-back clause, matching rights, and a hefty 35 per cent sell-on clause. If Vitek’s career explodes on Teesside, Old Trafford intend to feel the benefit.

This is a parting built on clarity rather than conflict. From the start of the summer, Vitek told United he wanted what every ambitious goalkeeper craves – to be a guaranteed No.1. With Senne Lammens established as first choice and Karl Dalow signed to be his deputy, the path in Manchester was blocked. Vitek was not interested in waiting for an injury or a cup tie. He wanted a shirt, not a seat.

He made that plain after United’s opening pre-season game against Wrexham, stopping in the mixed zone and cutting straight to the point.

“I feel great and ready to go again somewhere to be, hopefully, number one, so we will see. We will see what is going to happen,” he said.

The answer has arrived in the form of Middlesbrough, a club that flirted with promotion last season and see in the 6ft 6in keeper a cornerstone for another push. For Vitek, it is a chance to stop living out of a suitcase and finally build something of his own.

His Old Trafford story has been one of constant movement. United picked him up from Sigma Olomouc in 2020, slotting him into an academy that quickly realised his potential. He started every game in the club’s triumphant 2021/22 FA Youth Cup campaign, a run that marked him out as one to watch before he graduated to the Under-21s.

From there, the road twisted through a series of loans. Accrington Stanley took him in January 2024 on a six-month deal, a first real taste of the senior grind in English football. A season-long spell with Austrian side Blau-Weiß Linz for 2024/25 followed, another step away from the comfort of Carrington and into the harsher realities of first-team dressing rooms.

The crucial education, though, came back in England. A loan at Bristol City gave Vitek his first Championship exposure and, with it, a wider audience. His performances there stirred interest across the division and nudged Middlesbrough towards a decisive move.

United listened. They did not want to block his ambition, but they refused to lose control of his future entirely. The clauses tell their own story: they believe there is more to come.

Middlesbrough now hold the gloves of a 22-year-old keeper who has been hardened by three loans, shaped by an FA Youth Cup triumph and emboldened by the decision to walk away from one of the biggest clubs in the world in search of minutes, not medals.

He leaves Old Trafford without a senior breakthrough, yet with a record fee on his shoulders and a clear objective in his head.

He wanted to be a No.1. Now he has to prove he was right.
