QPR peppered the goal. Bolton barely laid a glove. Yet the points were shared.

Seventeen shots, nine of them on target, told the story of a home side that did almost everything but score. The visitors managed only two efforts all evening and never forced Pierce Charles into a save, but they walked away with a hard-earned draw that will feel far sweeter in the away dressing room than in the home one.

The frustration cut deepest for Kone and Vale. Time and again they found space, timed their runs, struck cleanly. Time and again they found Bonham. The Bolton goalkeeper denied each of them four times, standing between QPR and the breakthrough with a display that grew in authority as the minutes ticked by.

As the stalemate dragged on, the tension in the stands rose. QPR’s pressure built, the chances kept coming, but the net refused to bulge. Stephan rolled the dice in emphatic fashion, ripping up his frontline with a quadruple change. On came summer signings Dennis Cirkin and Tariq Lamptey for their debuts, fresh legs and fresh ideas thrown into the storm.

The pattern did not change. QPR pressed high, combined neatly, and kept asking questions. Bolton, promoted as League One play-off winners last season, answered them with resilience and discipline, blocking, clearing, and relying on Bonham when the line finally broke.

For the hosts, it was a night of regrets and missed opportunities. For Steven Schumacher’s side, it was something else entirely. Back in the second tier after a seven-year exile, Bolton have taken four points from their first two league matches.

They may not have thrilled with attacking ambition here, but they have announced their return with something every promoted side craves: a stubborn streak that already looks built for the Championship.
