PSG Targets Alvarez as Barcelona Lurks in Transfer Race
Paris Saint-Germain are gearing up for another heavyweight transfer battle, and this time the target is clear. Alvarez has climbed to the top of Luis Enrique’s attacking wishlist, with PSG preparing to go head-to-head with Barcelona for the Atletico Madrid forward this summer, according to ElDesmarque.
The Argentina international has just delivered the kind of season that turns interest into obsession. Twenty goals and nine assists in 49 appearances for Atletico have not only driven Diego Simeone’s side deep into major competitions, they have also pushed Alvarez into the spotlight across Europe. He is no longer a promising forward. He is a statement signing.
Enrique’s new front line
Luis Enrique wants to reshape his attack, and he sees Alvarez as the reference point of a new front three. The plan is bold: build around the Argentine’s movement and finishing, flanked by Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Behind them, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue would offer rotation and tactical flexibility.
It is an aggressive, high-tempo vision, and Alvarez sits at the heart of it. His ability to press, link play and still arrive in the box to score makes him the kind of modern centre-forward around whom a system can be constructed. For PSG’s hierarchy, he ticks the “marquee” box as well as the tactical one.
That ambition, though, comes at a cost.
Atletico dig in
Atletico Madrid have no intention of allowing their main forward to leave on the cheap. The message from the club is blunt: anything under €200 million will not even be entertained. Simeone sees Alvarez as central to Atletico’s long-term project, a player the club invested heavily in after prising him from Manchester City.
They consider him a cornerstone for the next cycle, not an asset to cash in on. His goals, his work-rate, his growing influence in big matches – all of it has convinced the Atletico hierarchy that he is the man to build around, not to replace.
Barcelona admire him too. They see the same qualities PSG do. But admiration does not pay transfer fees, and Barca’s financial constraints make a move at that price bracket almost impossible. Unless something dramatic shifts at Camp Nou, they are likely to watch this race from the outside.
That leaves PSG as the only realistic contender capable of matching Atletico’s valuation.
A second attempt from Paris
This is not the first time Les Parisiens have tried to bring Alvarez to the Parc des Princes. During his spell at Manchester City, when he was weighing up a move away from the Etihad Stadium, PSG made an approach. The club saw an opportunity to steal a young striker who wanted more minutes and a central role.
Alvarez did his homework. He spoke to an Argentina team-mate already based in Paris, seeking a first-hand account of life at PSG. The response, according to reports, was not glowing. The feedback helped sway him towards Atletico, where he chose to test himself in La Liga instead.
That decision has clearly worked for him. He has grown, scored, and become a fan favourite in Madrid. Now PSG are back, armed with a clearer sporting project and the same financial firepower from their Qatari-backed ownership. This time they hope the conversation – and the answer – will be different.
Timing, trophies and the next step
Any immediate movement, though, is likely to wait. Alvarez is expected to focus on his international duties with the Argentina national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup before committing to any transfer decision. For a player firmly established with his country, the next two years carry enormous weight.
At club level, he still has unfinished business. Atletico’s season brought drama but not the silverware he craves. They fell to Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final and exited the Champions League in the semi-finals against Arsenal. Near misses, not medals.
That hunger for major trophies will shape his choice. Stay in Madrid as the centrepiece of Simeone’s rebuild, or jump into a PSG project that is desperate to convert domestic dominance into European glory?
If Paris are truly ready to pay €200 million and hand him the keys to their attack, the answer to that question could redefine the forward lines of three of Europe’s biggest clubs.
