Porto and Roma Negotiations Stalled Over Rodrigo Mora

Porto and Roma have hit a wall over Rodrigo Mora – and it’s all about the numbers.

Talks between the clubs were broken off yesterday morning after Roma refused to accept Porto’s demands for the 19-year-old forward’s buy clause. The Portuguese side have set a brutal framework: a €10 million loan fee, a €40 million purchase option, clauses that could easily trigger an obligation to buy, plus performance-related bonuses and a percentage on any future resale.

Roma pushed back. Hard.

According to Portuguese outlet Ojogo, the Giallorossi rejected the package, judging the structure and overall outlay excessive. The stance has cranked up the tension between the clubs, yet the transfer is not dead. Not yet.

Jorge Mendes has stepped in as mediator, trying to keep the deal alive, but there were no direct contacts between Porto and Roma on Monday. The file sat on the table. The gap between positions remained.

Porto are standing firm on their valuation and on the mechanism that would almost force Roma into a permanent deal if certain conditions are met. Roma, for their part, are wary of locking themselves into such a heavy obligation for a player who is still unproven at the very top level.

So the Roman club now stare at a simple, uncomfortable choice: accept Porto’s terms as they are, or come back with an improved proposal on the obligation to buy and the overall structure of the deal.

The next move belongs to Roma.
