Philippe Coutinho Reunites with Neymar at Santos FC

Philippe Coutinho has reunited with close friend and Brazil team-mate Neymar at Santos FC, signing with the club until the end of the season.

The 34-year-old playmaker has been a free agent since leaving Vasco da Gama in February. He had returned to his boyhood side in 2024 and made 81 appearances before walking away, admitting he was “tired mentally”.

Now he steps into another chapter of a career that has taken him from Rio to Europe’s elite and back home again.

A reunion years in the making

Santos announced the deal with a heavy dose of nostalgia. The club posted an old photograph of Coutinho and Neymar as teenagers, then paired it with a fresh shot of the two recreating the same pose in the gym, older, heavier with experience, but side by side once more.

In a separate video, Coutinho walks into the dressing room to be greeted by a hug from Neymar. The midfielder, clearly emotional, says: “If it’s a dream, I don’t want to wake up.” For the first time, the long-time friends and Brazil colleagues will share a dressing room at club level.

Neymar himself returned to Santos, the club that launched his rise, in January last year. Now the fans who once watched him grow into a global star will see him link up with another of Brazil’s most gifted technicians of the last decade.

From Liverpool stardom to a new start

Coutinho’s journey has rarely been dull. He came through at Vasco before moving to Inter Milan, but it was at Liverpool where he truly exploded, scoring 54 goals in 201 appearances after arriving in 2013. His form on Merseyside earned a blockbuster £142m move to Barcelona in 2018, one of the most expensive transfers in football history.

The move never quite delivered what either side expected. Coutinho later had spells at Bayern Munich, Aston Villa and Al-Duhail, searching for rhythm and continuity away from Anfield’s glow, before circling back to Vasco.

Now comes Santos. Now comes Neymar. Two careers that once ran parallel finally intersect on the same pitch, in the same shirt, with a fanbase ready to see if they can light up Brazilian football together before the season runs out.
