Penybont 1-0 Colwyn Bay: Pritchard's Goal Secures Unbeaten Streak

Penybont’s unbeaten start to the Cymru Premier season survived a bruising night and a mounting injury list, edged out by a single, scruffy, vital goal.

They finished with three points and a clean sheet. They did not finish unscathed.

Injuries bite early

Inside 20 minutes, the plan was in pieces. Summer signings Jonathan Leko and Ryan Hill, both central to Rhys Griffiths’ attacking blueprint, were forced off, leaving the home crowd stunned and the bench scrambling.

The disruption could easily have flipped the game. Colwyn Bay sensed uncertainty, pressed higher, and tried to turn the mood. Instead, it lit a fire under Penybont’s replacements.

Pritchard punishes Halstead

One of those changes, Owain Pritchard, became the difference-maker.

When visiting keeper Mark Halstead misjudged a routine situation, Pritchard reacted first, quickest and sharpest, snapping up the loose ball and finishing from close range. No flourish, no fuss. Just a ruthless touch that pushed Penybont in front.

The goal settled the hosts and briefly opened the game up. The pressure almost told again.

Veteran forward Chris Venables, still a menace in the box, rose to meet a chance that had the home end ready to celebrate. His effort crashed against the crossbar, inches from doubling the lead and killing the contest.

Higgs stands tall as Bay rally

That miss kept Colwyn Bay alive, and they threw everything at the second half.

Callum Bratley and Ethan Roberts both carved out chances as the visitors pushed for a leveller, but each time they found young goalkeeper Daniel Higgs in their way. Higgs, under growing pressure, held firm with composed handling and sharp stops as the tension climbed.

The closing stages belonged to Bay territorially, yet Penybont refused to buckle. Blocks, clearances, bodies on the line – it was survival mode, and it worked.

When the final whistle went, the scoreline read 1-0, the unbeaten record remained intact, and Penybont had climbed to sixth. The question now is whether their resilience can keep matching their injury luck as the season grinds on.
