Pedro Neto’s World Cup Dream: Ready to Shine for Portugal

Pedro Neto has waited a long time for this. Twenty-five caps in, two goals for his country, and now, at last, a global tournament with Portugal where he can truly leave a mark.

His latest reminder of what he brings came in Portugal’s final warm-up game before the competition, when he struck in a 2-1 win over Nigeria. A sharp finish, a confident performance, and a clear message: he is ready.

Now comes the real thing.

Portugal head into the 2026 World Cup with group fixtures against DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia, and Neto is among the Blues stepping onto this global platform for the first time. For him, it is more than just another international window. It’s a personal mission.

“It’s a lot of motivation for my part,” Neto says, speaking ahead of the tournament. You can hear the drive in every word. This isn’t about simply turning up and ticking a box.

“I want to be there to help the team and to try to win it for the fans and for the family and for all my friends that I know I represent when I go there.”

He has watched Portugal on these stages his entire life. Euros. World Cups. Golden generations and near-misses. Now he steps into that picture himself.

“I used to look to all the competitions Portugal were in and to be a part of one, it’s like a dream come true, to be honest.”

The dream becomes reality in Houston.

Portugal open their Group K campaign against DR Congo at Houston Stadium on Wednesday 17 June, with kick-off at 6pm (UK). The second assignment in the group brings Uzbekistan, again at Houston Stadium, on Tuesday 23 June, also at 6pm (UK). Colombia complete a demanding section that offers no margin for complacency.

For Neto, those dates are circled in more than just ink. They mark the moment he can turn years of watching into weeks of doing, and transform motivation into something that lasts far beyond this summer.
