Ousmane Diomande: Nottingham Forest's Target Amid Liverpool Interest

Ousmane Diomande, long marked out as one of Sporting Lisbon’s next big exports, suddenly finds his future sitting on a fault line between a club desperate to make a statement and another accustomed to stealing the headlines.

Forest’s statement move hits a wall

Forest went early. They identified Diomande as a flagship signing for this window, a defender whose profile has already attracted some of Europe’s heavyweights. For a club still trying to cement its Premier League status, landing the 22-year-old Ivorian would have been a declaration of intent.

By the end of July, the deal looked almost done. BBC Sport reported Forest were “close to completing” an agreement with Sporting. Portuguese outlet A Bola then pushed the story on again this week, claiming on Wednesday that a move was “practically finalised”.

Then the ground shifted.

On Thursday, a separate report suggested the deal had collapsed. By Friday, even A Bola had rowed back, acknowledging that negotiations had hit serious trouble. The problem was not the price, but the way it would be paid.

Sporting’s stance is clear. They want a fixed fee of no less than €40m, with bonuses taking the package up to around €45m, plus a percentage of any future capital gain. According to A Bola, Forest accepted those numbers. The dispute lies in the payment schedule, a detail often buried in the small print but decisive in deals of this size.

So talks have stalled. Not dead, not yet, but fragile. And in that uncertainty, opportunity has appeared.

Liverpool sense an opening

Liverpool, who have so far moved quietly in this window, have been linked with Diomande for some time. Their only arrivals to date, Jeremy Jacquet and Victor Munoz, point more towards squad building than headline-grabbing overhaul, while much of the noise around Anfield has centred on attacking targets such as PSG pair Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye.

But the squad sheet tells another story. At centre-back, injuries have stripped away depth. At full-back, the options look thin if one or two first-choice names drop out. For a club still expected to compete on multiple fronts, that is a risk.

This is where Diomande fits. A 22-year-old central defender, already valued at around €40m, with the physical profile and ceiling to grow into a long-term pillar of a back line. It is exactly the sort of profile Liverpool have historically moved for when the timing and the price align.

French reporter Sebastien Vidal believes the moment might be arriving. Posting on X, he suggested Liverpool “could benefit from the failure of negotiations between Nottingham Forest and Sporting for Ousmane Diomande,” stressing that the player “remains available” and has been on the Reds’ radar as they look to strengthen the heart of their defence.

The logic is hard to ignore. A high-upside defender, a selling club with a defined asking price, and a rival’s deal stuck on structure rather than valuation.

A tug-of-war in the making

Forest are not out of this yet. The Portuguese reports still leave the door open to a resolution if both clubs can bridge the gap over payment terms. For a side that has already invested heavily since promotion, walking away from a target of this calibre would sting, especially after the deal advanced so far.

But Liverpool’s shadow changes the dynamics. Sporting know another wealthy suitor may be ready to step in. Diomande’s camp will be aware of the potential upgrade in status and competition. Forest, for all their ambition, cannot match Anfield’s pull if Liverpool decide to move decisively.

Right now, the deal sits in that tense space where one phone call, one revised offer, can flip the narrative. Either Forest salvage their statement signing, or Liverpool do what elite clubs so often do in this market: arrive late, pay cleanly, and walk away with a player who was supposed to be going somewhere else.

For Diomande, the next move could define the next phase of his career. For Forest and Liverpool, it may say plenty about how each club intends to face the season ahead.
