Nottingham Forest Sign Ousmane Diomande for £34.3m

Nottingham Forest have made their move. After weeks of hard bargaining with Sporting, the club have completed the signing of Ivory Coast defender Ousmane Diomande on a four-year deal worth around £34.3m (€40m).

This is not a speculative punt. It is a deliberate, manager-driven signing.

Glasner gets his man

Oliver Glasner has pushed this transfer from the start. The Forest head coach tried to bring Diomande to Crystal Palace during his time at Selhurst Park and has finally got the powerful centre-back he has long admired.

Now he gets to build a Premier League defence around him.

Diomande arrives with serious pedigree for a 22-year-old. Across the last four seasons at Sporting, he played 132 games, scored seven goals and collected two Primeira Liga titles. Last season he helped the Lisbon club to a domestic double and into the Champions League knockout stages, gaining the kind of high-pressure experience Forest have been craving at the back.

On the international stage, he is already a champion. Diomande was part of the Ivory Coast squad that lifted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s first continental title in eight years, and he has 15 caps to his name, including an appearance at this summer’s World Cup.

“I will give my best”

Diomande spoke like a player who understands the weight of the move and the size of the club he is joining.

“I am very happy to be here. It is a historic club, and it motivates me to join such a club,” he said after signing. “I believe we can achieve very good things this season and I am looking forward to meeting the players and head coach.

“I will give my best and all I can to help the team. I cannot wait to meet the supporters at the City Ground and together we can have a good season.”

The message is clear: he has not come to make up the numbers.

A defender built for the Premier League

Inside the club, there is no attempt to play down the scale of this move. Chief football officer George Syrianos underlined just how closely Diomande fits the profile Forest have been chasing.

“We have been very clear on the profile of player we want to add to the squad, so we are excited to welcome Ousmane to the club,” Syrianos said.

“He has fantastic experience for a defender of his age. Playing a crucial role in title-winning teams and going into the latter stages of the Champions League puts him in a great position to integrate well here at Forest.

“Ousmane is a powerful, commanding defender, and arrives here with a winning mentality. He shares the same ambition for success we have, and we are excited to see the impact he can have in a Forest shirt.”

Powerful. Commanding. Winning mentality. Those are the traits Forest have lacked too often in recent seasons when games have turned frantic and the back line has bent under pressure.

A summer of change at the City Ground

Diomande’s arrival headlines a busy window at the City Ground, one that has already seen a major reshaping of the squad.

Forest have backed Glasner with a mix of high-profile investment and smart, opportunistic business. Alongside Diomande, they have added Xaver Schlager from RB Leipzig on a free, as well as Boyd Fraser from Hearts, Mason Ayre from Glentoran, Blaine McClure from Rangers, Grady McDonnell from Club Brugge and Kasen Brown from Manchester City, all for undisclosed or no fees.

The outgoing list is just as striking. Elliot Anderson’s £116m move to Manchester City stands out as a landmark sale for the club, while David Carmo has joined Olympiacos and Joe Gardner has gone to Falkirk, both for undisclosed fees. Cormac Daly has left for Hearts on a free, with Angus Gunn heading to San Jose Earthquakes, Ben Hammong to Boston United, Justin Hanks to Solihull Moors and Danny Anisjko to Chesterfield, all as free transfers.

Jota Silva has moved to Olympiacos on loan, while Willy Boly, Stefan Ortega, Shae Cahill and Esapa Osong have all been released.

It is a reset. A leaner, more targeted squad, built around players Glasner trusts.

A new defensive leader?

For Forest, this is about more than just one signing fee. Diomande is being brought in to anchor a new era, to give structure and authority to a side that has flirted too often with the wrong end of the table.

He has already lived through title races, Champions League knockout ties and a triumphant AFCON campaign. Now comes a different kind of test: the relentlessness of the Premier League and the expectation of a fanbase that believes the club should be looking up, not over its shoulder.

Diomande says he is ready. Forest are betting heavily that he is. The next few months will show whether this is the moment their defence finally grows into a unit that can carry those ambitions.
