Nottingham Forest Secures €40 Million Deal for Ousmane Diomandé

Nottingham Forest have struck a major defensive deal, agreeing a €40 million fee with Sporting Portugal for centre-back Ousmane Diomandé, according to transfer specialist David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The 22-year-old is expected to travel to England as early as Saturday for his medical. If all goes to plan, the right-footed defender will sign a five-year contract and anchor a Forest back line being aggressively rebuilt for the new season.

From bargain buy to €40m pillar

Diomandé’s rise has been rapid. Sporting only brought him in from FC Midtjylland in January 2023, paying between €7.5 million and €12.5 million and agreeing a 20 per cent sell-on clause with the Danish club. Eighteen months later, they are cashing out at the top end of the market.

At the start of this year, Sporting moved to secure their asset, extending his contract through to mid-2030 and inserting an €80 million release clause. On paper, he was locked down. In reality, €40 million has proved enough to tempt the Portuguese champions into a sale.

Standing 1.90 metres tall, Diomandé offers the physical presence Premier League managers crave, but his value to Sporting has been more than just height and muscle. His comfort on the ball and ability to defend large spaces turned him into one of the most coveted young centre-backs in Europe. Sporting now bank a huge profit and Midtjylland’s sell-on clause ensures a healthy return in Denmark as well.

Forest’s new spine

For Forest, this is not a vanity signing. It is the centrepiece of a structural rebuild.

Diomandé is expected to slot into a back three alongside Nikola Milenkovic and Murillo dos Santos, giving Forest a blend of youth, aggression and experience at the heart of their defence. It is a clear statement that the club intend to step away from the relegation scrap narrative and build something more stable, more ambitious.

He will not be alone in trying to drag Forest up a level. The club have already moved decisively in midfield, landing holding midfielder Xaver Schlager on a free transfer from RB Leipzig, a shrewd piece of business given his pedigree in the Bundesliga and in European competition. Ahead of him, Forest have paid €20 million to bring in attacking midfielder Gustavo Sá from FC Famalicão, a creative addition to knit play in the final third.

There is also a familiar face waiting for Diomandé in the dressing room. He will link up with compatriot Ibrahim Sangaré, the former PSV midfielder who already carries the responsibility of driving Forest’s engine room. The Ivorian connection at the City Ground suddenly looks like a core, not a coincidence.

Sporting’s summer of sales

For Sporting, Diomandé’s departure is part of a broader, ruthless summer on the market.

His transfer is the fourth major windfall of the window for the Lisbon club. Geovany Quenda’s €50 million move to Chelsea set the tone. Morten Hjulmand followed with a €40 million switch to Atlético Madrid, and Francisco Trincão left for Al-Ahli in a deal worth another €40 million.

The money has not stopped there. Alisson Santos’ permanent move to Napoli brought in €16.5 million, while Diogo Travassos joined SC Braga for €5.5 million. Piece by piece, Sporting have turned their squad into a financial powerhouse, banking sums that can reshape the club’s future on and off the pitch.

The cost, of course, is talent walking out of the door. But in Diomandé’s case, the cycle is complete: scouted young, developed quickly, sold at a premium. Sporting move on with cash in hand. Forest move on with a new defensive leader. Now the question is simple: can Diomandé turn a bold transfer into a defining Premier League presence?
