Northampton Town Signs Striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester City

Northampton Town have landed striker Nathan Opoku from Leicester City on a permanent deal, signing the Ghanaian on a three-year contract at Sixfields for an undisclosed fee.

It is a bold move – and a fascinating one.

Opoku’s route into the English game has never been straightforward. Now 25, he arrived at Leicester in 2023 from Syracuse University in the United States, a jump that already marked him out as a different kind of prospect. Leicester immediately sent him to their Belgian sister club OH Leuven, where he found the net five times and began to shape his European education.

League Two got a proper look at him last season. Opoku joined Newport County on loan and finished as the Exiles’ top scorer, hitting six goals in 30 league appearances. The numbers are steady rather than spectacular, but they hint at a forward who can carry responsibility over a long campaign.

Cobblers boss Chris Hogg has clearly been convinced for some time.

“He has had a different journey to most players but that has helped him gain a good breadth of knowledge and experience and he is an excellent age,” Hogg told the club’s website, underlining both Opoku’s background and his potential.

Those loan spells matter. Time at Leicester’s set-up, minutes in Belgium, a full season battling in League Two – Hogg believes that mix leaves Opoku ready to deliver now, not later.

“He has spent the last three years at Leicester City and enjoyed loan spells both in Europe and last season in League Two so he knows the level and he has scored goals at this level,” Hogg said.

Northampton have not moved on a hunch. Hogg made it clear this has been a long-running pursuit rather than a late-summer scramble.

“We have tracked Nathan for a while so we know all about him, we have done our homework and we know he is hardworking, has an excellent attitude and is a good person, he is a good character and a good player.”

For a club intent on pushing on, that combination of character, mileage and untapped ceiling is exactly what they are banking on. Now it is over to Opoku to turn a winding journey into a defining chapter at Sixfields.
