Neymar's Health Update: Expected Fit for Derby Against Corinthians
Santos breathed a cautious sigh of relief on Friday as Neymar Jr. missed tactical training with flu-like symptoms but is still expected to be available for the derby against Corinthians.
The Brazilian star was pulled out of the session at CT Rei Pelé on medical advice, just as Cuca’s side were sharpening their final plans for the short trip to their fiercest neighbours. With the team hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone, the sight of their captain on the sidelines, even briefly, was the last thing they needed.
The club moved quickly to calm nerves.
In an official statement, Santos explained: “The athlete Neymar Jr. presented flu-like symptoms and was rested from Friday's (August 28) training session, following advice from the Health Department.”
Reports indicate he is due back in training on Saturday and remains in contention to start the clássico.
Santos’ caution is understandable. Neymar has been the heartbeat of their attack this season, with nine goals and eight assists in 24 appearances. When he plays, Santos look dangerous. When he doesn’t, the drop-off is brutal.
They only need to look back at the 3-0 collapse against Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil, a night when they had to cope without their captain and paid heavily for it. That defeat left them staring at a three-goal deficit heading into the quarter-final second leg.
Current Challenges
Now Cuca has more than just Neymar’s health on his mind. Joao Schmidt is suspended after an accumulation of yellow cards, stripping the midfield of a key piece. Gabriel Menino is also out with a knee sprain, thinning the options even further at a time when the schedule offers no mercy.
The immediate priority is Corinthians. Santos sit just two points above the Campeonato Brasileiro relegation zone, and a poor result in the derby could drag them straight into the dogfight. A positive performance, led by a fit Neymar, would ease the pressure and buy Cuca some breathing room.
Upcoming Fixtures
But the calendar refuses to relent. After the clássico, Santos must somehow chase down that three-goal deficit against Palmeiras in the Copa do Brasil quarter-final second leg. Then comes a demanding away trip to Internacional, a fixture that caps a brutal run just before the domestic schedule pauses for the break.
Neymar’s brief flu scare underlines the reality for Santos right now: their season, in many ways, rests on the shoulders of one man. How long can he keep carrying it?
