Newcastle Joins Felix Nmecha Transfer Race Amid Dortmund Complications
Felix Nmecha’s name has been circulating around England for weeks. Now another Premier League contender has stepped into the frame.
Newcastle United have joined the list of clubs tracking the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool already credited with strong interest in the 25-year-old Germany international.
This is not a new crush on Tyneside. According to Sky Sports, Eddie Howe has admired Nmecha for some time and weighed up a move back in 2023, before Newcastle chose to invest heavily in Sandro Tonali from AC Milan instead. The Italian arrived, Nmecha stayed in Dortmund, and the story seemed to close.
It clearly hasn’t.
Newcastle are again looking at ways to refresh and deepen their midfield, and Nmecha’s profile fits the brief: a central midfielder comfortable on the ball, with the athleticism and technical range to operate in several roles. For a recruitment team obsessed with versatility and age profile, he ticks almost every box.
The problem is the price.
Sky Sports report that Nmecha’s contract at Borussia Dortmund contains an €85 million release clause, a figure that would place him among the most expensive signings in Newcastle’s history and demand serious financial commitment from the club’s hierarchy.
Yet the situation is murkier than a simple buyout. Reports from Germany have countered that there is no active release clause in Nmecha’s deal until 2027, casting doubt on whether any club can simply trigger a fixed fee this summer. If that stance holds, Dortmund would retain full control over any negotiations and could drive a harder bargain, or simply refuse to sell.
So the chase becomes more complex. English giants are circling, Newcastle have revived a long-standing admiration, and Dortmund hold a player whose contractual details are being read like fine print on a title decider.
If someone does decide to test their resolve, the question is blunt: who is willing to pay elite money for Felix Nmecha, and how far will Borussia Dortmund push the price in a market already on edge?
