Real Madrid are learning to live without Aurelien Tchouameni – and Jose Mourinho intends to keep it that way until the Frenchman is bulletproof.

Benito’s case for Zubimendi is not built on eye-catching numbers or highlight-reel moments. He points to positioning, intelligence, and clean, reliable use of the ball. A midfielder who makes the collective better, not just himself.

The Spain international also brings competitiveness and bite in duels – traits Mourinho has always valued in the heart of his teams.

Madrid already boast serious midfield talent. Valverde brings relentless energy. Jude Bellingham dominates higher up the pitch. Tchouameni offers power and defensive security. Zubimendi, though, represents something different: a pure organiser, a player who gives structure and clarity to everyone around him.

In Benito’s eyes, he is perhaps the closest thing on the market to the profile Madrid lost out on when Rodri went elsewhere.

“If you can get your hands on him and he’s to Mourinho’s and the club’s liking… I wouldn’t hesitate to sign him. Zubimendi makes those around him better,” the former midfielder said.

Door closed for now – but not forever

For the moment, a move is unlikely. The report states that Real Madrid consider their squad effectively closed. At Valdebebas, there is no expectation of late arrivals or departures before the window shuts.

Arsenal, for their part, have also shut the door on a transfer this summer. The 27-year-old is not available.

Even so, Benito believes Madrid should be ready to act if the situation changes and Zubimendi becomes attainable with Mourinho’s approval. If not now, then later.

The club may not move for him this summer, but that does not mean the idea dies here. Zubimendi is a profile that would improve this Madrid midfield whenever he walks through the door.

This could be one of those stories that refuses to go away, resurfacing every window as long as Madrid search for that elusive controller – and as long as Zubimendi keeps growing at the Emirates.
