Jose Mourinho's Bold Reinvention of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has never been afraid of a bold reinvention. At Real Madrid this summer, the next one on his workbench might be Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The England international has arrived in Spain as one of Europe’s most creative full-backs. He may end up leaving the position behind.

“The new Beckham” – but not in Manchester

Former Manchester United and Scotland defender Phil Bardsley believes Mourinho has the perfect stage – and the perfect squad – to shift Alexander-Arnold permanently into midfield at the Bernabéu.

Speaking to Casinolyze, Bardsley was emphatic about two things: he cannot see Alexander-Arnold in a United shirt, and he can very much see him thriving in a Beckham-style role at Real.

“I love Trent Alexander-Arnold but I would be shocked to see him in a Manchester United shirt,” Bardsley said. “It will be interesting to see what happens to him at Real Madrid, whether Jose Mourinho fancies him or not.”

The question, in Bardsley’s eyes, is not whether Alexander-Arnold is good enough for Madrid. It’s where Mourinho chooses to unleash him.

From right-back to right midfield

For years, debates around Alexander-Arnold have circled the same fault line: devastating on the ball, vulnerable without it. Bardsley’s view is simple – stop letting the defensive arguments drown out the obvious.

“We talk about his defending being an area where he needs to improve,” he said, “but he creates so many chances, and Madrid have so many willing runners, that you could just play him on the right in midfield.”

The vision is clear. Alexander-Arnold stationed higher up, wide on the right, with licence to deliver rather than defend. Less concerned with tracking wingers, more focused on picking out Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior in full flight.

“He’d play the role David Beckham used to play for Real,” Bardsley added, “pinging balls for Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior to run onto because Trent is finding you no matter what.”

It is a comparison that carries weight in Madrid. Beckham’s time at the Bernabéu was defined by his range of passing, his crossing, his ability to turn runners into weapons. Bardsley sees Alexander-Arnold as a modern version of that profile – different in style, similar in impact.

“I think Mourinho will look at that and carve out a different sort of role for him,” he said, “and it’d suit him down to the ground with the amount of time he’d get on the ball and the passes he could play.”

The verdict on a Premier League return is blunt. “It wouldn’t be a bad idea at all but I can’t see him coming back to England to play for Manchester United. I can see him playing in a way that makes him the new David Beckham. Just not at United.”

Mourinho’s demands, Madrid’s heat

While the tactical talk gathers pace outside, Alexander-Arnold is already learning what life under Mourinho feels like on the inside.

Pre-season at Valdebebas has been intense. Double sessions, soaring temperatures, and a manager who expects sharpness from day one.

“So far, so good. It’s hot and very intense. We’re in preseason, and that’s what we expected,” Alexander-Arnold said through the club’s official channels, giving a first glimpse into the demands of his new environment.

On Mourinho himself, the respect is obvious.

“With Mourinho? Very good, very good. I’ve always admired the coach. I’ve played against him a couple of times and it’s a pleasure to work with him and his team.”

The admiration is mutual territory Mourinho has often turned into opportunity. He has rebuilt careers, redefined roles, and reshaped players to fit his plans. Alexander-Arnold, with his passing range and vision, offers a fresh puzzle.

Does Mourinho keep him as an adventurous right-back, refined but recognisable? Or does he take the gamble Bardsley is urging and push him into that Beckham corridor on the right of midfield, feeding one of the most frightening forward lines in world football?

Pre-season will not settle the argument. It will, however, give the first clues. And if Alexander-Arnold starts spending more time in those advanced pockets, with Mbappé and Vinícius glancing over their shoulders, Real Madrid might be about to unveil not just a new signing, but a new position.
