Jose Mourinho's Fury as Rodri Chooses Barcelona Over Real Madrid

The midfielder who just dragged Spain to a World Cup title and walked away with the Best Player award was supposed to be the man who restored order at the Bernabeu. For weeks, Rodri looked destined to swap Manchester for Madrid and anchor Jose Mourinho’s new Real era.

Then, in a single day, the whole operation collapsed.

On Thursday, reports emerged that negotiations between Real Madrid and Manchester City had broken down. What had been framed as a near-inevitable move suddenly turned into a scramble. Into that vacuum stepped the last club Florentino Perez and Mourinho wanted to see: FC Barcelona.

According to SPORT, a call from Hansi Flick proved decisive. The new Barça coach spoke directly with Rodri, and the conversation swung the midfielder towards Catalonia. Terms between player and club are now understood to be agreed, with Barcelona working on a summer deal with City.

Inside the Bernabeu, the mood turned dark.

Perez, long accustomed to closing the biggest deals in the sport, is described as angered by Rodri’s decision to turn down what is believed to have been a strong personal offer from Real Madrid. The sting cuts deeper because the player hasn’t just rejected Madrid; he has chosen the other side of the Clasico divide.

If Perez is angry, Mourinho is said to be livid. SPORT’s anonymous sources claim the Portuguese coach “couldn’t believe the news” when told Rodri had rejected Madrid and was on his way to Barcelona. For a manager who built his reputation on control and structure, losing the game’s outstanding holding midfielder to his fiercest rival is more than a transfer setback. It’s a tactical and symbolic blow.

The frustration has not been reserved for the player. Mourinho has reportedly vented at Real’s hierarchy as well. Club executives have informed him there are no plans to reinforce the midfield, arguing that the current market does not offer options they deem worthy and that the squad is already “full” after a heavy recruitment drive.

Real have been busy. Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Denzel Dumfries, Carlos Espi, Ibrahima Konate and Yan Diomande have all arrived in this window. On paper, it looks like a squad stacked for a title assault.

On the pitch, the picture has been very different.

Across the last two seasons, Barcelona have scooped up five of the six domestic trophies on offer. Real Madrid, in that same period, have gone without a single piece of domestic silverware. For a club that measures itself in titles, not transition, the drought has been brutal.

Many inside and outside the club have pointed to the same fault line: midfield control. Since the departures of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric in 2024 and 2025, Real have never truly replaced their influence. The team has often looked stretched, games have slipped away, and matches that once felt inevitable now feel fragile.

Rodri was supposed to be the answer to that problem. A metronome with bite. The player to restore calm, dictate tempo, and shield a defence rebuilt around new faces. Instead, he now looks set to walk into the dressing room at the Camp Nou and strengthen the very side that has been punishing Madrid’s shortcomings.

It does not help that Real have also hesitated over another potential solution, Enzo Fernandez of Chelsea. While the club weighed up their options, the market moved, and the chance to reset the midfield with a marquee signing has drifted further away.

So Mourinho is left with a squad that may be numerically “full” but still feels unbalanced in the area that matters most to him. He must now squeeze control from what he has, construct a midfield without the player he had clearly earmarked as the cornerstone, and do it while watching Rodri potentially transform Barcelona’s engine room.

In Spain, where margins at the top are thin and memories are long, the question is no longer whether Rodri could have changed Madrid. It’s how much damage he might do wearing Barcelona’s colours instead.
