Moratti's €500m Bid for Messi: A Failed Attempt

Massimo Moratti has lifted the lid on a staggering, failed attempt to bring Lionel Messi to Inter back in 2012 – an offer so huge it never even made it to the negotiating table.

Speaking to Catalan newspaper Sport, the former Inter president admitted he authorised a bid worth 500 million euros to try to tear Messi away from Barcelona. It was a fantasy move, even by the wild standards of modern football.

"I did something crazy in 2012, I made Messi an offer worth 500 million euros," Moratti recalled. "In that year, this figure was crazy, and I sent Inter's vice-president to Barcelona to negotiate, but Messi did not even open the letter, and did not know the value of the offer. He rejected it without knowing the details."

The scene is almost surreal. Inter’s delegation flies to Barcelona armed with one of the most eye-watering proposals the game has seen. The letter is delivered. The answer is already no.

Messi didn’t even want to hear the numbers.

According to Moratti, the Argentine star later explained his stance to him directly. The money, the project, the prestige – none of it could compete with what he already had.

"I appreciate your interest in me, but I want to retire at Barcelona," Messi told him when the two finally spoke.

Moratti, by his own admission, knew Messi’s heart was set on staying at Camp Nou. He tried to test that resolve anyway. The cheque could not change the player’s mind; the bond with Barcelona ran deeper than any contract.

The irony is cruel in hindsight. Messi never did get the farewell he imagined in Catalonia. He left Barcelona in 2021 not by choice, but because the club could not renew his contract amid a severe financial crisis. He joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer, closing a historic chapter in European football with a whimper rather than the grand send-off many expected.

From Paris, he moved on to Inter Miami, swapping the Champions League spotlight for a new life and new league in the United States. The dream of walking away as a Barcelona player, the dream he had once spelled out to Moratti, remained unfulfilled.

What he left behind in Spain, though, barely needs retelling. Messi spent the bulk of his career at Barcelona and became the greatest player in the club’s history, the driving force behind an era of dominance that reshaped the sport. League titles, domestic cups, global trophies – he collected them relentlessly.

Among the many peaks, the 2015 Champions League stands out, secured as part of that devastating attacking trio with Luis Suarez and Neymar. It was the kind of front line that made even the wildest transfer fantasies – like Moratti’s €500m bid – feel almost unnecessary.

In the end, Inter’s audacious move never stood a chance. Not because the money wasn’t there, but because, at that moment, nothing could compete with Messi’s loyalty to Barcelona.
