Middlesbrough Nears £7 Million Deal for Ashley Phillips

Middlesbrough are closing in on a £7million deal for Ashley Phillips, raiding Tottenham’s academy conveyor belt for the second time this summer as Kim Hellberg sharpens his squad for another tilt at promotion.

Standard Sport understands Boro will pay an initial £7m for the 21-year-old centre-back, with performance-related add-ons potentially inflating the final fee. Spurs have also secured a sell-on clause, protecting their interest if Phillips’ value explodes on Teesside.

The defender is set to undergo a medical as Middlesbrough finally land a player they have tracked all summer. Their persistence has paid off. Phillips has been a long-term target and is now poised to follow Will Lankshear from north London to the Riverside, after the striker’s club-record move last month that could rise to around £20m.

Hellberg’s Intent

Hellberg’s intent is clear. Beaten by Hull in May’s play-off final, Boro are not licking their wounds; they are doubling down. The Swede wants a squad built to last over a 46-game slog and the pressure of another play-off push, and he has identified Phillips as a key piece in reshaping his back line.

This is no raw project. Despite his age, Phillips already owns more than 100 Championship appearances, collected during spells with Blackburn, Plymouth and Stoke. He knows the grounds, the grind and the tempo of the division. Middlesbrough are not guessing at how he will cope with the step; he has lived it.

Tottenham's Strategy

Tottenham plucked him from Blackburn in 2023 for £2.5m, with Rovers inserting a 15 per cent clause on any profit from a future sale. That clause now kicks in, handing Blackburn a slice of the uplift as Phillips moves on again after just a year in north London.

For Spurs, this is part of a wider summer reset. The England youth international becomes the latest academy product to leave permanently, joining Lankshear, Alfie Devine and Tynan Thompson out of the door as the club leans hard into player trading.

The strategy is obvious on the balance sheet. With Phillips’ sale included, Tottenham are edging towards £100m in outgoing transfer fees in this window alone, a crucial counterweight to the £237m they have already committed on new signings.

And they are not done yet. Spurs still expect to bring in two or three more players before the window closes next month, a final flurry that will test how far this aggressive, sell-to-spend model can stretch in one turbulent summer.
