Ilian Meslier's Surprising Move to Arsenal's Third-Choice Keeper

Ilian Meslier has arrived in north London with a glowing CV and a curious brief. Signed after leaving Leeds United on a free, the 26-year-old has been brought in as experienced cover behind David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga. On paper, it’s depth. To one former Arsenal goalkeeper, it looks like a step backwards.

Graham Stack, who came through the Arsenal system and knows exactly what it means to wait your turn, cannot get his head around Meslier’s decision to accept a third-choice role at the reigning Premier League champions.

“I question him, I really do question the goalkeeper,” Stack told Metro. “The reason I say that is that he’s got Premier League experience, he’s played countless games in the Premier League, he’s got bundles of experience, been at Leeds for I don’t know how many years.

“He’s played loads of games, and maybe he doesn’t have that burning desire to go and play games and put himself under pressure. Maybe that’s what he’s after.

“But I’m just surprised with someone of Meslier’s quality that he’s decided to almost chuck the towel in and be a number three.”

Meslier spent six years at Elland Road, racking up 215 appearances for Leeds United, riding the highs of promotion and the lows of being frozen out under Daniel Farke. From that vantage point, a move to Arsenal should look like a leap to the elite. For Stack, the choice to park himself behind Raya and Arrizabalaga hints at a softening edge in a player who has already proved he can handle the Premier League spotlight.

Academy alarm bells

Stack’s frustration doesn’t stop with Meslier. For him, the transfer shines an uncomfortable light on Arsenal’s own goalkeeping production line.

Meslier’s arrival has already pushed one highly rated prospect towards the exit door, at least temporarily. Tommy Setford, 20, is expected to leave on loan in search of regular football, his pathway to even a bench role at the Emirates suddenly blocked by another external signing.

“Look, he’s experienced, but it’s highly unlikely that you would use him,” Stack said of Meslier’s likely role. “My question is, is there not another goalkeeper at Arsenal Football Club that’s capable of that?

“What are they doing at the club that they’re not producing any goalies? They just keep signing goalies. At what point is there going to be an Arsenal goalkeeper that’s going to, not even break through, but I’m talking about being a number three.”

For a club that prides itself on youth development, the optics are stark: a 26-year-old with more than 200 senior games arriving to sit behind two established options, while a homegrown hopeful heads out to find minutes elsewhere.

Meslier all-in on Arteta’s project

Meslier sees it very differently. Where Stack sees a gamble on stagnation, the Frenchman sees the pinnacle of English football and a chance to reset his career after a bruising final year in Yorkshire.

“I’m extremely happy. It’s a great day for me because I have just joined the champions. For me, Arsenal is the biggest club in England. I’m very happy and very proud to join Arsenal,” he told the club’s official website.

“I cannot wait to show the love that I’ve got for this badge, and I cannot wait to win trophies with this team, because this is a club that needs to lift trophies again and again.”

Meslier has already pulled on the shirt, making his debut in a pre-season friendly against Girona earlier this month. He arrives hungry for medals, convinced that even as a squad player he can be part of a group that keeps stacking silverware under Mikel Arteta.

Title belief burns bright

If Stack is unconvinced by the goalkeeping plan, he is bullish about everything else happening at Arsenal.

The champions have moved aggressively in the market. Bruno Guimaraes has arrived as the headline signing, a statement addition in midfield, with Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis also bolstering Arteta’s options. The spine looks stronger, the squad deeper, the intent obvious.

“Absolutely, Arsenal will win it,” Stack said, without hesitation. “I think Arsenal will be buzzing after last year, and think it’s a situation now where it’s basically the monkey off their back.

“They will be going into the season absolutely buzzing, and with the signing of Guimaraes and probably more to come between now and the start of the season, I think they will definitely strengthen.

“I fancy Arsenal to go and win it, but I think that it will be a close-run race with Man City, I think City will be close behind them.”

So Arsenal head into the new campaign with a squad that looks ready to defend a title and a goalkeeping department that has sparked a fierce debate. Meslier calls this the biggest club in England and talks about trophies. Stack hears that and wonders if a keeper of his age and experience should be fighting for a starting shirt somewhere else instead.

The season will reveal whether this was a clever depth move by a champion side—or the moment a talented goalkeeper chose comfort over the chaos of competition.
