Marshall's Comeback Victory Against VCU: A 3-1 Triumph

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore VCU apart.

Down early and rattled by a defensive mistake, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered goals to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their record to 2-0-2.

Early shock, quick response

Marshall’s night started in a haze. A miscue at the back in the seventh minute left Ty Johnson clean through on goal. He coolly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and rolled it in, silencing the home crowd and putting VCU 1-0 up.

With a squad still learning each other’s rhythms, the Herd looked exactly that—new. Head coach Chris Grassie pointed to the growing pains of a rebuilt group, stressing how much of Marshall’s game depends on instinctive, almost wordless communication in possession and movement.

The response came from distance. And with venom.

Eight minutes after the opener, Goncalo Machado slipped a pass to Thiago Apolinario, who needed no invitation. Spotting VCU keeper Manuel Monteiro off his line, Apolinario unleashed a stunning strike from nearly 40 yards. Monteiro was caught out, the ball flew in, and Apolinario had his third goal of the season. Just like that, 1-1 and the mood inside Hoops Family Field flipped.

Obert holds the line

VCU refused to fade. The Rams carried a threat throughout the first half, finding spaces and forcing Marshall to defend deeper than it wanted.

Obert, though, stood firm. His best moment before the break came in the 31st minute, when he produced a key save to keep the game level. That stop sent the teams into halftime tied at 1-1 and gave Marshall the platform it needed.

Second-half surge

Marshall came out of the locker room sharper, quicker, and far more ruthless.

Just before the 50-minute mark, the ball broke loose outside the 18-yard box. It fell to Joao Roberto, who didn’t hesitate. One touch, then a driven finish past Monteiro. From 1-0 down to 2-1 up, the Herd had turned the game on its head.

VCU chased the equalizer, and the tension crept back in. Again, Obert answered. He denied the Rams in the 59th minute, then came up big once more in the 85th to protect the slender lead. Each save tightened Marshall’s grip on the match.

Romberg seals it late

As VCU pushed higher in the final moments, the final mistake was theirs.

In the 90th minute, a Rams error left Carl Romberg in alone. He made no mistake, slotting home the third goal to finish the contest and seal a comeback win for Marshall.

From an early lapse to a composed, clinical recovery, the Herd showed both their flaws and their ceiling. There is, as Grassie suggested, a very good team in there. Nights like this drag it closer to the surface.
