Marcus Rashford Returns to Manchester United Spotlight Against AC Milan

Marcus Rashford is back in the Manchester United spotlight this afternoon – and the stage could hardly be more charged.

United face AC Milan in Wroclaw in their final pre-season outing, a game that already carried weight as Michael Carrick fine-tunes his squad. Add Ruben Amorim in the opposite dugout, and it becomes something else entirely.

The history is raw. During Amorim’s disappointing spell at Old Trafford, his relationship with Rashford collapsed in full view. The turning point came around the Manchester derby in December 2024, when Amorim dropped the forward and then banished him from first-team training. For a while, it felt like the end of Rashford’s United career.

January brought the first escape route. Rashford left on loan for Aston Villa for the remainder of the season, a move that looked like a bridge to a permanent exit rather than a fresh start at United.

When he came back, the picture hardly improved. Rashford found himself placed in a so-called “Bomb Squad” group and was quickly shipped out again, this time to Barcelona on a season-long loan. While he tried to rebuild in Spain, Amorim’s own position at United crumbled. He was sacked and replaced by Carrick, a change that quietly reopened a door Rashford probably thought was bolted shut.

For much of last season, the expectation was simple: Barcelona would make the move permanent. A £26m buy option was in place, and the forward appeared set to stay at Camp Nou.

Then the Catalan club chose a different path. They passed on the clause and signed Anthony Gordon instead. Rashford’s future flipped again.

After the World Cup, he returned to Carrick’s United and has been edging back into the fold. He spent this week in Dublin with the squad but did not feature against Leeds. Now he has been named in the travelling party for the Milan clash – against the coach who once froze him out.

Carrick has not revealed how many minutes, if any, Rashford will get, but the symbolism of his inclusion is impossible to ignore.

Fans make their feelings clear

If the manager is still weighing up how to use him, the supporters are not.

In a poll of Manchester United fans, 2,799 votes were cast on whether Rashford should play against Milan. The response was emphatic: 84 per cent said “Yes”. Only 13 per cent felt he should sit it out, with three per cent unsure.

For a player who was pushed to the margins under Amorim, that level of backing is a reminder of his standing with the fanbase – and perhaps a hint of the redemption arc many still want to see.

Mainoo, JJ Gabriel and a different era

Rashford is not the only player with unfinished business from the Amorim era. Kobbie Mainoo, who also endured a difficult spell under the Portuguese coach, has been included in the squad as well. His presence under Carrick feels like part of a broader reset, a chance to reframe careers that stalled in a turbulent period.

Teenage forward JJ Gabriel has also been handed another opportunity with the first team, his rapid rise one of the more intriguing subplots of United’s pre-season.

So United head into Wroclaw with a new manager, old scars, and a winger who once seemed out of the door now back on the team plane. Whether Carrick unleashes Rashford against Amorim this afternoon or holds him back, the question hangs over the fixture: is this just a pre-season tune-up, or the first real step in a full-scale revival?
