Marcus Rashford Takes Manchester United No.9 Shirt as Carrick Supports Revival

Marcus Rashford is staying at Manchester United – and now he has the shirt to prove it.

After a year on loan at Barcelona and months of uncertainty over his future, United have confirmed the 26-year-old will wear the club’s iconic No.9 this season. The announcement lands just before their Premier League opener away to newly promoted Hull on Saturday and underlines a simple message from Old Trafford: Rashford is part of the plan.

He returns to a different dressing room and a different number. His old No.10 was handed to Matheus Cunha last summer when it looked as though his United career had run its course. Barcelona held an option to make his move permanent for £26million but chose not to trigger it. United then placed a £40m price tag on him. No one bit.

So he’s back. And he’s been given one of the most demanding shirts in the club’s history.

The No.9 carries weight at United. It belongs to the central figure of the attack, the player expected to carry goals, pressure and responsibility. Rashford has inherited it at a moment when Michael Carrick needs him more than ever.

Support from Carrick

Carrick, now firmly backing his former team-mate, has been impressed with what he’s seen since Rashford returned to pre-season.

"It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie [Mainoo] and Licha [Lisandro Martinez] pretty much, in Dublin, that he's come back fantastically well," the United manager said in his pre-match press conference.

"He's enjoying his football, he looks fit, he looks sharp, he looks strong, he looks ready to play football. So, I've been delighted with him since he's come back."

The question now is where Rashford will do his damage. He has long preferred operating from the left wing, facing play, driving inside. The No.9 suggests something different.

Asked whether Rashford could be used through the middle, Carrick didn’t hesitate.

"Of course he can play through in the middle. He has done," he replied. "I wouldn't say it's naturally his No.1 position, but he can do that, and I think we've got forwards that give us that flexibility right across the frontline, we've used all of them, pretty much, in slightly different roles. So, I think for us to have that option is really good moving through the season."

Flexibility across the front line, a new number, and a manager who clearly believes the reset can work. For Rashford, this feels like a second debut.

Rashford's Talent

Carrick, speaking to TNT Sports, went back to the beginning to frame the scale of Rashford’s talent.

"Marcus is a highly talented player. When I was playing and he came into the team, he was fresh, young and playing in the No. 9 position. He burst onto the scene and did some unbelievable things," he said.

"He has had such a good career and people judge things and always expect the best, best, best out of everyone all the time, but some of the greatest players that played alongside me here had ups and downs throughout their career.

"I remember Giggsy (Ryan Giggs) had some challenging times on the pitch during his twenties and that's just part of the game and look at how he finished his career. That's part of being a player, especially here when the club has enjoyed so much success and then there are times when it doesn't come so easy.

"You have to deal with it and push on, and Marcus looks really good. He looks sharp, he's in a really good place, and it's been great to have him back around over the last couple of weeks."

Around him, United are quietly shaping the next generation. Academy talents Shea Lacey and JJ Gabriel have been handed squad numbers too, No.31 and No.77 respectively, a reminder that the pathway from youth to first team remains open.

Rashford once walked that same path, a teenager thrown in at No.9 and trusted to swim. Now, years later, he wears that number again with a different weight on his shoulders and a point to prove.

The loan is over. The price tag talk has faded. The doubts, though, haven’t gone away.

The only place he can answer them now is on the pitch, with that No.9 on his back and a season that could yet redefine his United story.
