Manchester United Targets Manu Kone After Tchouameni Deal

Manchester United’s ideal Casemiro successor has slipped out of reach. The response from Old Trafford has been swift.

Aurelien Tchouameni, long viewed inside the club as the perfect anchor for their next midfield era, has agreed a new contract with Real Madrid after talks with incoming coach Jose Mourinho. United had quietly nurtured hope that Madrid might cash in to fund another marquee midfield signing, with Rodri and Enzo Fernandez both heavily linked with the European champions.

That door has closed. Tchouameni is staying in the Spanish capital.

So United are moving on – and the spotlight has swung back to Manu Kone.

From Madrid setback to Roma opportunity

The blow over Tchouameni is not just symbolic. The 26-year-old France international had already replaced Casemiro at the Bernabeu in 2022, and United’s hierarchy saw him as the “dream target” to repeat that handover in Manchester.

There is a growing sense that the player’s agent, who also represents Kone, used United’s interest as leverage to secure improved terms for Tchouameni. Well-placed sources still maintain a transfer could have happened if Madrid had been willing to sell, but Mourinho’s intervention ended that possibility.

That same agent now sits at the heart of United’s Plan B.

Kone, a teammate of Tchouameni in France’s World Cup squad, shares representation with the Madrid midfielder. Those recent conversations with INEOS did not just cover one client. Roma’s stance on Kone was also on the table.

Kone emerges as a “serious option”

According to TEAMtalk, United are now “plotting a move” for Kone after being informed of Roma’s £50 million valuation of the 25-year-old.

Roma’s situation has opened a window. Despite a strong Serie A campaign that brought a comfortable third-place finish and Champions League qualification, the club still need to raise funds to stay on the right side of UEFA’s financial regulations. Inside the Giallorossi hierarchy, Kone is viewed as their most valuable saleable asset.

Intermediaries have already tested the market. Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been sounded out as potential destinations. The Premier League is very much in the conversation.

United, crucially, fit the player’s own ambitions. Kone is understood to be open to a move to England, and previous reporting has suggested he is “very keen” on a switch to Old Trafford specifically.

The profile United want

On the pitch, Kone ticks a lot of the boxes United have been searching for since Casemiro’s influence began to wane.

He is a powerful, physical midfielder who relishes duels and covers ground aggressively, but he also carries the ball with real purpose. At 6ft 1in, he brings presence as well as athleticism, driving play forward rather than simply recycling possession.

His performances at the World Cup sharpened that reputation. On the biggest stage, he showcased the blend of technical quality and dynamism that has caught the eye of scouts across Europe.

One game in particular lingers in the memory of decision-makers. In France’s 3-0 group-stage win over Iraq, Kone started in place of the injured Tchouameni, who was sidelined with an adductor problem. Didier Deschamps trusted Kone to mirror Tchouameni’s role at the base of midfield. United have clearly taken note of that logic: if he can be Tchouameni’s stand-in for France, he can be Casemiro’s heir in Manchester.

INEOS weigh their midfield hand

INEOS have been briefed on a range of options. TEAMtalk report that Eduardo Camavinga’s potential availability has also been flagged to the new powerbrokers at Old Trafford, but Kone is currently viewed as a “serious option” to reinforce Michael Carrick’s engine room.

The financial equation is straightforward. Roma’s £50 million price tag is significant but not outrageous in a market where elite midfielders routinely change hands for far higher sums. For a 25-year-old with Champions League football on his CV and international pedigree, it represents a calculated gamble rather than a wild swing.

What happens next will depend on how hard United push and how urgently Roma need to sell. For now, one thing is clear: the Tchouameni fantasy is over.

The question now is whether Manu Kone becomes the midfielder around whom United finally rebuild their spine, or just another name on a growing list of nearly-men in a restless Old Trafford summer.
