Manchester United Targets Felix Nmecha for Midfield Rebuild
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and the next name on the radar underlines how ambitious this summer’s project has become.
With Ederson already through the door and Casemiro gone, Michael Carrick has been handed both the responsibility and the budget to reshape the spine of his side. A third-place finish last season has nudged United back towards respectability, but nobody at Old Trafford is pretending the gap to Arsenal and Manchester City can be closed without serious investment.
Carrick wants power, control and legs through the middle. United’s recruitment team is now scouring Europe for exactly that blend.
Nmecha moves up the list
Mateus Fernandes has dominated much of the early transfer chatter, yet another midfielder has quietly climbed United’s shortlist: Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha.
The 25-year-old Germany international, currently at the World Cup, has emerged as a player admired inside Old Trafford. His recent contract extension at Dortmund makes any immediate move unlikely, but it has not cooled United’s interest. If anything, it has parked the idea for a later date rather than killed it.
Sky Sports Germany reporter Patrick Berger outlined the situation on X, reporting that United are “stepping up their pursuit” of Nmecha, with Director of Recruitment Christopher Vivell in “close contact” with the player’s camp. That alone tells its own story. This is not a passing glance. It is active monitoring.
United are not alone. Berger also noted that Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid are tracking developments, with a move to the Premier League viewed as a realistic option down the line. For now, though, Nmecha is said to be happy at Dortmund and locked in on Germany duty.
Dortmund’s stance is strengthened by his new deal, which will see him move into the salary bracket previously occupied by Niklas Süle at the club when the new season begins. That pay rise underlines how highly he is rated internally.
A Bundesliga climber with Premier League dreams
Nmecha’s profile has surged in Germany over the past year. His influence on the national team at this World Cup has sharpened the focus on a player long regarded as underappreciated. He was even dubbed “the most underrated midfielder in Europe” by The Overlap, a tag that feels less far-fetched with every high-level performance.
Technically secure, tactically disciplined and increasingly assertive in the final third, Nmecha has become a central figure for club and country. Dortmund moved quickly to tie him down, aware that his value and importance were only heading one way.
Head coach Niko Kovač made that clear when the new contract was announced. He described Nmecha as a “key player” at a “good age,” stressing that the midfielder is “slowly reaching his peak” and can become “even more dangerous in front of goal.” The message was blunt: Dortmund see him as a cornerstone, not a commodity.
Yet the Premier League pull remains. Reports in recent months have suggested Nmecha is very open to playing in England at some stage, a prospect made more appealing by the presence of his brother, Lukas, at Leeds United. Family ties, a growing reputation and a league that prizes his skill set — the ingredients for a future move are all there.
United’s midfield question
For United, the interest in Nmecha fits a clear pattern. Carrick wants a younger, more dynamic core to his midfield, one that can press, play and dominate the biggest games. With Casemiro gone and the club determined to avoid another short-term patch, the search has tilted towards players entering their peak, not leaving it.
Nmecha, at 25, with World Cup experience and a central role at a Champions League club, ticks almost every box. The timing, though, is awkward. Dortmund have just rewarded him, his stock is rising, and there is no pressure on them to sell.
So United watch. They talk. They keep the lines open through Vivell and wait for the market to shift.
In a summer where Old Trafford is determined to think long-term rather than chase quick fixes, the real question is simple: when the moment finally comes to move for Felix Nmecha, will United still be at the front of the queue?
