Manchester United Target Alejandro Balde from Barcelona

Manchester United’s search for a new left-back has taken a sharp twist, and it leads straight to Barcelona.

According to Jijantes, Alejandro Balde has decided to leave the Catalan giants, a call that could reshape United’s plans for the final weeks of the summer window. His agent, Jorge Mendes, is already at work, sounding out potential destinations and trying to secure a move before the deadline closes in.

For Barcelona, it marks a sudden shift. Balde played a key role in their success last season, racking up 42 appearances in all competitions as they lifted both the La Liga title and the Supercopa de Espana. At 22, he looked like part of the next generation at the club.

Hansi Flick sees it differently. The new Barcelona boss does not consider Balde central to his long-term plans, and first-team minutes are expected to be scarce this season. With his pathway blocked, the full-back has chosen to look elsewhere.

That decision swings the door wide open for Manchester United.

Erik ten Hag’s side are in the market for a left-back. Tyrell Malacia has departed on a free, while Patrick Dorgu is viewed more as an option on the left wing than a traditional full-back. Luke Shaw remains the undisputed first choice, but United want someone who can share the load and compete for the spot across a long, demanding campaign.

Initially, United identified Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as an ideal profile. Young, homegrown, comfortable on the ball – he ticked every box. But that avenue is closing fast. The 21-year-old is expected to stay at St James’ Park and has entered talks over a new contract. Newcastle have gone further, offering him a place within the club’s leadership group under manager Matthias Jaissle, a clear sign of how highly they rate him.

So United look elsewhere. And Balde suddenly looks like a perfect fit.

The Spain international is still only 22 but already boasts 168 senior appearances for Barcelona, an impressive body of work at one of the game’s most demanding clubs. His game is built on raw acceleration, sharp dribbling and fearless ball-carrying from deep, the kind of attributes that can flip defence into attack in a heartbeat.

For a United side craving more thrust and dynamism down the left, Balde represents a rare opportunity: proven at the top level, still developing, and now seemingly available.

If Barcelona are truly ready to move on and Balde is set on a new challenge, the question is no longer whether he fits United’s needs. It’s whether the club are prepared to move quickly enough to bring one of Europe’s brightest young full-backs to Old Trafford before the window slams shut.
