Manchester United Eyes Sorloth as Striker Search Intensifies

Manchester United’s late-window hunt for a centre-forward has taken a fresh twist, with Alexander Sorloth emerging as a potential solution from Atletico Madrid.

With Carlos Baleba already through the door from Brighton in a £70million deal, United’s attention has turned sharply to two positions before Tuesday’s deadline: a backup No 9 and a left-back. Michael Carrick wants cover and competition for Benjamin Sesko up front after Joshua Zirkzee’s departure, and another option to push Luke Shaw on the left side of defence.

Zirkzee, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, has given the green light to a return to Serie A with Fiorentina. The Italian club have gone a step further and lodged a loan offer with United, including an option to buy at the end of the season.

That leaves United exposed in the middle of the attack.

They have already sounded out Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic and Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is keen to move on from Selhurst Park. Both fit the brief as physical, penalty-box presences who could spell Sesko. But they are not the only names on the table.

TEAMtalk report that intermediaries have now ‘offered’ Sorloth to United, putting the 6ft 5in Norwegian firmly in the frame. Across his senior career, Sorloth has racked up 175 goals in 475 appearances – the profile of a pure No 9 rather than a wide forward repurposed through the middle.

That is exactly the type United are looking for. A specialist centre-forward, strong enough to lead the line and experienced enough to push Sesko, while also covering him across a long season.

Crucially, Sorloth is understood to be open to leaving Atletico and would consider a return to the Premier League. He knows English football from his spell at Crystal Palace between January 2018 and September 2020, even if that chapter never really caught fire. Just 20 appearances for the Eagles and loan spells at Gent and Trabzonspor left him with unfinished business in England.

A move to Old Trafford would hand him a far grander stage on which to answer those old questions.

Atletico, for their part, are prepared to cash in at the right price. Sorloth is under contract until June 2028, so there is no immediate pressure to sell, but any deal will depend on Diego Simeone’s side lining up a replacement first. They are weighing moves for Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and Juventus forward Jonathan David as potential successors.

The exact fee Atletico would demand for Sorloth remains unclear at this stage, but the Spanish club know there is interest across Europe in their forwards.

While Sorloth’s future is being discussed, attention in Madrid is also fixed on Julian Alvarez. Barcelona and Arsenal continue to circle, yet Atletico are adamant they will keep him. Alvarez has publicly expressed his desire to leave, a stance that has gone down badly with sections of the club’s support and only intensified the noise around Simeone’s attacking options.

Back in Manchester, the debate over United’s next striker signing is gathering pace. Speaking on the Talk of the Devils podcast, Laurie Whitwell underlined the likely shape of any late business.

“Loan is what I have heard in terms of incoming,” he said, pointing towards a short-term fix rather than a major outlay.

Andy Mitten echoed that sense of movement without certainty. “Will we see new players come in? I think it’s increasing, I think it’s a possibility. I don’t know if the player would be signed or loaned. If you lose a striker, United look light up top.”

That is the crux of it.

United have money already invested in Baleba, a young star to build around in midfield. They have a new focal point in Sesko. What they do not yet have is the depth behind him that a season of domestic and European demands will require.

Sorloth, with his size, experience and penalty-box instincts, has been placed on their desk as an answer. The clock is ticking. Whether United reach for him in these final days of the window will say plenty about how bold – or cautious – this rebuild under Carrick is prepared to be.
