Manchester United Set to Sign Youri Tielemans as Midfield Overhaul Begins

Manchester United are closing in on Youri Tielemans after moving to activate a £35 million release clause in the Aston Villa midfielder’s contract, sources have told ESPN, in a deal that would add proven European pedigree to a rapidly changing Old Trafford engine room.

United have accelerated talks after Tielemans made clear he wants the chance to join the club. Aston Villa would prefer to keep the 29-year-old, but the clause leaves them with little room to manoeuvre if United follow through and the player pushes for the move.

A serial performer in big games, Tielemans has been central to Villa’s rise. He has spent three years at Villa Park and played a key role in last season’s Europa League triumph, anchoring a side that grew in authority as the campaign wore on. His form carried onto the international stage, where he scored twice in Belgium’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Senegal in the World Cup round of 32, underlining his knack for stepping up when the stakes spike.

If United complete the signing, Tielemans will become part of a broader midfield overhaul already well under way. He is expected to join Andrey Santos, with a £50m agreement in place with Chelsea and only formalities remaining before that transfer is announced. The pair would offer contrasting but complementary profiles: Tielemans with his experience and range of passing, Santos bringing youthful energy and long-term upside.

The reshaping is not confined to midfield. In goal, United are close to adding Karl Darlow from Leeds United, a move designed to sharpen competition for established No. 1 Senne Lammens. Darlow’s arrival would bolster depth and experience in a position United are clearly unwilling to leave to chance.

Not every target is moving closer, though. Sources have told ESPN that United are currently not proceeding with a deal for Atalanta midfielder Éderson. The clubs had previously agreed a £35m fee for the Brazil international before the World Cup, positioning him as a serious option for the summer window. That agreement now sits idle, the transfer no longer advancing.

United have not disclosed the precise reason for the pause and have been careful not to close the door completely. The possibility of revisiting Éderson later in the summer has not been ruled out, leaving the situation parked rather than dead.

For now, the focus is clear: lock down Tielemans, finalise Santos, and put Darlow in place behind Lammens. If United get those three across the line, their midfield – and the spine behind it – will look very different by the time the new season kicks off.
