Manchester United Sign Carlos Baleba for £70m

Manchester United have finally landed Carlos Baleba, sealing a deal with Brighton that could rise to £70m and underlining a radical reshaping of their midfield.

The 22-year-old Cameroon international arrives on a five-year contract, with an option for a further 12 months, after United agreed a £65m fee plus £5m in add-ons and a sell-on clause. His signing pushes the club’s summer outlay on midfielders to around £148m.

Baleba becomes the third new face in the middle of the pitch, following Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. The rebuild has been forced as much as planned: Casemiro has departed and Manuel Ugarte is facing a long spell out with a serious knee injury. United needed fresh legs and a new heartbeat. They have paid heavily to get it.

“It is an incredible feeling to join the club of my dreams,” he said. “Playing at Old Trafford is always special but the opportunity to do so as a Manchester United player will be a real honour.

“I cannot wait to work with Michael Carrick. His experience and knowledge of the game make him the perfect coach to help me to reach the highest level.

“The ambition of everyone at the club is extremely clear, the future is hugely exciting, and I am determined to play my part in delivering the success that we are capable of together.”

United first pushed for Baleba a year ago. Brighton’s stance was firm then: he was not for sale. The chase cooled, the file stayed open. Over the past week, United went back in hard and this time the door opened.

Baleba did not hit his top level last season on the south coast, but United were not deterred. They see a powerful, press-resistant midfielder with room to grow, and were prepared to pay a premium to secure him now rather than watch the market move without them.

Jason Wilcox, United’s director of football, made the club’s view clear.

“Carlos is an elite midfielder with immense potential to develop further. He brings a unique combination of qualities that will really complement our squad.

“We are delighted to further strengthen our midfield with the addition of another established senior international with a proven track record of performing in the Premier League.”

Three new midfielders in one summer, one high-profile exit, one major injury. The centre of United’s team will look and feel very different when the season starts. The question now is simple: can Baleba become the player they have spent a year – and a small fortune – waiting for?
