Manchester United Sign Baleba for £70m in Midfield Revamp

Manchester United have finally got their man. After a long chase and months of speculation, the Red Devils have completed the signing of midfielder Baleba from Brighton in a deal worth up to £70 million.

United will pay an initial £65m, with a further £5m tied to performance-related add-ons. The 22-year-old Cameroon international has signed on at Old Trafford until 2031, with the club holding an option to extend the contract by a further year. This is not a short-term fix. It is a statement of intent.

Long pursuit ends with major investment

Baleba has been on United’s radar for some time, his name repeatedly linked with a move north since his early days at Brighton. Now the chase is over, and the club have committed heavily to a player they clearly see as central to their next midfield era.

He arrives with three full Premier League seasons already behind him. Brighton signed him from Lille in 2023 for an initial £23.2m, developing him into one of the division’s most eye-catching young midfielders. United are now paying the premium for that progress.

Fernandes: “Young and exciting”

Inside the dressing room, the reaction is already positive. Bruno Fernandes, speaking at the PFA Awards after being named the 2026 Players' Player of the Year, did not hide his enthusiasm.

"He's a very energetic player. Strong physically, he can push us up the pitch driving the ball," Fernandes said. "Young and exciting, the club have been following him for two years."

That last line tells the story. This is not a panic buy after a bad result. Scouts at Old Trafford have tracked Baleba closely, and the club have now moved decisively to bring him in alongside their captain.

Midfield overhaul in full swing

Baleba’s signature caps an aggressive reshaping of United’s midfield this window. Andrey Santos has arrived from Chelsea. Youri Tielemans has come in from Aston Villa. Now Baleba joins them, adding power, legs and verticality to a department that has too often looked flat and predictable.

The idea is clear: surround Fernandes with mobility, intensity and ball-carrying threat. On paper, United now have a blend of youth, experience and physical presence that should transform how they play through the middle of the pitch.

Response to a stuttering start

The timing matters. United have started the season poorly, slipping to a shock 2-0 defeat away at newly promoted Hull City on the opening weekend. Santos and Tielemans both started alongside Fernandes in that game, but the balance was missing and the performance never caught fire.

Manager Michael Carrick needs a response, and quickly. Baleba’s integration will be central to that. His ability to drive the ball forward, cover ground and compete physically offers something different to what United showed at Hull.

The club wanted energy. They’ve paid heavily for it. Now the question is simple: can Baleba be the midfielder who drags United’s season back on track?
