Manchester United vs Sabah FK: Champions League Return Preview

Manchester United’s wait is over. After three years in the wilderness, the Champions League anthem returns to Old Trafford.

On Thursday, Sept. 10, United host Azerbaijani side Sabah FK, a club stepping into the Champions League group stage for the first time. The contrast in history is stark; the pressure, very real for both.

For Michael Carrick, the romance of the occasion collides with the reality of a packed schedule. Sabah on Thursday, a derby against Manchester City on Sunday, Sept. 13. Two games, four days, and a squad already stretched.

How Manchester United could line up vs Sabah

Senne Lammens is in line to start in goal, tasked with handling the nerves of a Champions League return and the expectation that United dominate.

In front of him, a back four with energy and aggression: Diogo Dalot on the right, Lenny Yoro and Lisandro Martínez as the central pairing, and Noussair Mazraoui likely operating from the left. It is a defensive unit built to control the ball as much as protect the box.

Kobbie Mainoo and Youri Tielemans are the probable double pivot in holding midfield. Mainoo’s composure and press resistance alongside Tielemans’ range of passing offers Carrick a platform to dictate the tempo and pin Sabah deep.

Further forward, the creative burden falls on a trio that looks built to overwhelm. Bryan Mbeumo from the right, Bruno Fernandes through the middle, and Matheus Cunha operating from the left or drifting inside. Movement, shots from distance, constant pressure between the lines — Sabah will have to live with all of it.

Leading the line, Benjamin Šeško provides the focal point. His height, runs in behind and penalty-box presence give United a clear target to aim for, especially if Sabah sit deep and invite crosses.
