Manchester United's Pre-Season Challenge: Will Sesko Be Ready?

Manchester United head to Gothenburg this weekend with Paris Saint-Germain on the horizon, a glamour friendly in name but a serious checkpoint in their pre-season. The squad list tells its own story.

Youri Tielemans is in. Bruno Fernandes travels as captain. Benjamin Sesko does not.

For the second time in a row, the Slovenian striker’s name is missing from Michael Carrick’s 22-man travelling party, a detail that is starting to grate on a fanbase still scarred by last season’s injury mysteries.

Sesko’s stop-start summer

Sesko’s issue, on paper, was never meant to be a saga. He aggravated a shin problem against Liverpool late last season, an injury that ruled him out of United’s final three games of the campaign. The word then was reassuring: not serious, back for pre-season, ready to go.

That version of events has not materialised.

United have ticked off their warm-up fixtures one by one, but Sesko has yet to play a single minute. While others build rhythm and relationships, the club’s No.30 remains stuck in the grey area between the treatment room and the pitch.

He has been seen at Carrington. He has not yet joined full-contact training.

Manchester Evening News reporter Steven Railston moved to calm the growing concern, reporting that Sesko is “still on track to be fit for the start of the season” and has been stepping up his rehabilitation at the club’s training base. The message is simple: no need to panic.

The calendar tells a different kind of truth. The season is closing in.

Echoes of De Ligt

What unsettles supporters is not just the delay, but the familiarity of the script.

Last season, Matthijs de Ligt was initially tipped to miss only a short spell. That absence stretched into six months and became one of the defining frustrations of United’s campaign. The communication never quite matched the reality on the pitch.

With Sesko, the early brief was again optimistic. A knock, nothing more. Expected back in pre-season. Yet as United prepare for a marquee test against the European champions in Gothenburg and a training camp in the Republic of Ireland next week, there is still no clear answer on when he will rejoin full team sessions, let alone play.

Questions grow in the gaps where clarity should be.

Fitness vs. sharpness

On raw numbers, Sesko’s first season at United hinted at a player ready to explode. He delivered 12 goals and 1 assist in 32 appearances, logging 1,817 minutes and offering a constant outlet with his 6 ft 5 in frame and penalty-box presence.

That platform is now at risk of erosion.

Even if the medical timeline holds and Sesko is declared fit for the opening day, he will arrive there stripped of match sharpness. Pre-season is where strikers find their timing, their instinctive movements, their chemistry with creators like Fernandes and now Tielemans. Sesko has missed almost all of it.

Carrick faces a delicate call. Does he throw his centre-forward into competitive action cold, trusting his athleticism and nose for goal to carry him through? Or does he hold him back, protecting the player but potentially limiting United’s attacking options in the first weeks of the campaign?

Much could depend on whether Sesko can squeeze in even a single pre-season appearance before the curtain rises.

For now, United head to Gothenburg with PSG waiting, Tielemans bedding in, and Fernandes leading the group. The spotlight, though, lingers on an absent No.30 and a simple, nagging question: when the real games start, will Benjamin Sesko be ready in body only, or in rhythm as well?
