Manchester United's Next Steps for JJ Gabriel and Harry Amass After U21 Victory

Manchester United’s academy conveyor belt showed its teeth again on Monday night – and now the club’s hierarchy must decide how quickly to crank it up.

A ruthless 5-0 win over Ipswich Town in Premier League 2 at Leigh Sports Village gave a sharp reminder of the talent building beneath the first team. In the stands, Michael Carrick watched two names stand out: Harry Amass and 15-year-old JJ Gabriel.

One is on the brink of senior football. The other is barely out of school.

Both are forcing conversations.

Amass caught between opportunity and game time

Carrick has been impressed with Amass all summer. The 19-year-old left-back has operated as understudy to Luke Shaw in pre-season and arrives off the back of a promising, if disrupted, year in the Championship.

He shone on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, then saw momentum stall after a mid-season switch to Norwich City was cut short by injury. Even so, his stock has risen.

United have failed to land a senior left-back in this window, a gap that would normally open the door for a young defender to stake a claim. Instead, Carrick has admitted Amass could still walk through a different door before Tuesday’s deadline.

A loan is now viewed inside the club as more likely than a permanent sale, with staff weighing up his need for regular minutes against the demands of a long season.

“It comes to this stage of the window, and there's always a little bit where, and this is not just Harry by the way, this is just the stage of the window and putting squads together and dynamics of changes, and younger players and loans and not loans, and all sorts of different scenarios,” Carrick said.

“I think we always try to do the best for each individual player, as well as keeping the group strong. I've been really pleased with Harry. I think he had a really good season that didn't finish so good with the injury, but it's been great to have him around pre-season. He's done really well. So, let's see what happens. But he played really well the other night.”

The message is clear: United rate him. They just have to decide whether his next steps come in Manchester or somewhere he can start every week.

JJ Gabriel announces himself in style

If Amass is edging towards the senior picture, Gabriel is still at the beginning of his journey – but already leaving marks.

On his competitive debut for the U21s, the 15-year-old delivered the kind of performance that makes coaches sit up. A stunning goal, two assists, and a level of composure that belied his age in a game dominated by United’s youngsters.

Carrick, who has already had Gabriel train with the first-team group, liked what he saw.

“I thought the boys played ever so well, actually,” he said after watching from the stands. “Really good team, really strong team that we had, and you could see the quality. I really enjoyed the game.

“Really pleased with the boys, the way they went about it. The quality, the attitude, everything about the game was really good. So, really encouraged by that.

“JJ is one of the boys. He's obviously got a really big talent. He's trained with us quite a bit. He's getting experience all the time. He's physically adapting to each step that he makes, and just continuing his development.”

The plan with Gabriel is different. There is no talk of loans or exits, just careful management of a prodigious talent being nudged up the age groups. The club want him tested, not rushed.

On a night when United’s youngsters tore through Ipswich, the contrast between the two stories was striking. Amass, ready for senior football but needing a platform. Gabriel, fearless and raw, already hinting at a ceiling that could be far higher.

United now have to judge the timing. How quickly do they push a teenager who looks at home against older opponents? And how far do they trust a young left-back to step up if injuries bite in the first team?

The academy has done its job. The next decisions will show just how bold United are prepared to be.
